Does Losing Weight Change Your Shape?   By Laura Flynn

You've just dropped those ten pounds you've been trying to lose since last Thanksgiving. But will losing the weight necessarily change your shape? The answer may depend on whether you're an "apple" (with most of your weight in your midsection) or a "pear" (with most of your weight in your hips). A new study done by the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine looked at overweight women who had lost an average of twenty-seven pounds over a period of four to six months. What they found: "Appleshaped" women tended to lose weight from their midsections, so their shape changed as they slimmed down.

"Pear-shaped" women, though, tended to lose the weight equally between their upper and lower bodies, so their overall shape didn't change so dramatically. Thomas Wadden, Ph. D., who headed the study, stresses that "young women should accept the way they look, instead of trying to achieve a shape that's unreasonable for them." But those of you who have always secretly dreamed of being a little top-heavy, 'take heart. An in-shape pear can look fantastic. (Think of Cher and Christie Brinkley-two perfect examples of body-beautiful pears-if you don't believe us.) So don't stop trying to get in shape.
