Style Q & A

"Scarves are a great way to dress up beachwear. Wrap a colorful bandanna around your head, or tie a big scarf around your waist, sarong-style."

Is it okay to wear accessories with my bathing suit? --CHERYL M., ALBANY, GA

Go for it. Whether you're at the beach or by the pool, accessories are the perfect way to show off your flair for fashion. Be a trend-bender on the boardwalk by wearing an armful of big, bright, waterproof watches instead of bracelets. (Feeling really funky? Wrap one around your ankle.) Scarves are also a great way to dress up beachwear:

Wrap a colorful bandanna around your head, or tie a big scarf around your waist, sarong-style. And don't forget the sunglasses-multicolor, blazing-hot neon shades are all the rage. When it comes to earrings and necklaces, go for plastic or wooden costume jewelry-leave the expensive gold and silver at home. Metals heat up in the sun and are too valuable to risk losing in the sand or surf.

My favorite jean jacket is starting to look old and rumpled-but I don't want to junk it. What can I do to make it look jazzier? --MONET T., TOPEKA, KS

The easiest way to take your denim jacket from sloppy to chic is by simply adding a few extras. Hide flaws by attaching inexpensive "antique" brooches and pins. (They can be found at thrift shops.) You can also camouflage frayed collars and cuffs by sewing on strips of lace and fabric. If your denim is in dire straits, go for a major makeover with a dye job. (You can find do-it-yourself dye kits in most supermarkets and discount stores.)

Short, show-off fashions are really in style now. But I have a hard time finding clothes that flatter my skinny legs. Any advice? --ANDREA C..SPOKANE, WA

You 're in luck! The latest look in jeans is wide and baggy-the perfect shape for making thin legs look shapelier. If you want to wear miniskirts and shorts, pair them with patterned leggings in bold prints. When the weather cools down, switch to thick, ribbed leggings topped with a fitted jacket or tailored blouse.

This Fourth of July I want to throw a party. How can I make it an awesome bash? --SHARON A., PACIFIC PALISADES, CA

Want to have a real blast? Take advantage of the warm weather and have the party outside. Then follow these star-spangled tips:
. To set the mood, cover tables with white paper tablecloths decorated with gold stick-on stars. Use red, white, and blue bandannas for napkins. String up several strands of miniature white lights on trees in the backyard.
. Keep the menu simple with barbecued hamburgers, hot dogs, corn on the cob, and potato salad. For dessert, have tons of watermelon on hand, or decorate your favorite cake with sparklers.
. For music, play some of these patriotic party tunes: Born in the U.S.A. by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Pink Houses and R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A. by John Cougar Mellencamp, Surfin' U.S.A. by the Beach Boys, and American Girl by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
