What's A Curl to Do?

Four easy steps to killer curls that won't drive you crazy... But just might drive them wild.
Do you get jangled when your curly hair gets tangled? Well, relax. We got the "kings of kink" - Nestor Vivas and Ray Symons from New York's La Dolce Vita Salon to teach us some simple tricks for taming those hard-to-control tresses.
1 CLlP IT! Ray (whose specialty is styling) says large clips are the cure-all for rebellious rolls. To give Julia's hair more direction at the roots- without intimidating her natural curl- Ray clipped her damp hair just around the face. Then he let her locks dry naturally before removing the clips. Finally he applied a styling aid (Bold Hold Power Curl Booster) to add fullness and body.
2 PERM IT! Spot perms are a great option for girls who complain that one side of their hair is curlier than the other. Nestor (who's a pro with perms and hair coloring) created soft, consistent waves for Julia's hair by rolling the hair on the top of her head with large rods placed in an inverted-T shape. (How they work: The vertical rods straighten hair, while the horizontal rods curl it. This way, the hair closest to the forehead ends up straighter and more manageable than the rest of the hair.)
3 SCRUNCH IT! When styling or untangling wavy hair, sometimes it's best to let your fingers do the walking. Here, Carla and Julia rubbed styling gel (we like Final Net Superior Control Shaping Gel) between the palms of their hands. Then they scrunched the gel into sections of hair to lock in curl and control frizzies.
4 PART IT! Don't have time to fuss with styling gels or curling irons? Then try a side part. To keep Carla's hair straight at the roots - and let her curls fall freely - Ray swept her thick hair over to one side.
