Short Hair Is Me

"I feel more like a model with short hair because it gives me a really distinctive look."

HAlR GOES . . . Why try a short cut? We've got a few good reasons to say "so long" to lengthy locks:

1. It's quick. You can dry your hair in a flash. All it takes is a quick blast of the blow dryer-or let it go au naturel.

2. It's versatile. Comb hair back, brush it forward, gel it up, push it into a part, tuck it behind your ears. What you do is entirely up to you.

3.It's flattering. Short hair shows off your best features (high cheekbones, a long, graceful neck, a classic profile).

4. It's hassle-free. There's no tug-of-war with tangled tresses or messing around with an unruly mane. (And kiss kinks goodbye.)

5. It's cool. Simply put, short hair holds up a lot better than long hair and that's especially important during the summer, when you're under the sun and going from sand to surf a couple of times a day.

6. It's hot. A short cut can create a whole new look for you by changing your face's overall proportion and appearance.

7. It's happening. . . now.

"You can't hide behind your hair when it's short-so the real you can't help but come shining through."

YESSIREE, BOB! "I knew my hair was in bad shape," say Krista. "But I was afraid to let go of the length. I've always had long hair." Fortunately, hairstylist Awad of New York's Bruno Dessange salon convinced Krista that she'd look better in a blunt cut. To get rid of her thick hair's heaviness and bring out her natural wave, he cut her hair at chin length all around. Then he added soft layers in front for more movement.

Finally Awad parted her hair on the side to flatter her strong features. To care for her new 'do, Krista just shampoos her' hair and lets it dry naturally. Krista's reaction to her new look: "It took me a while to get used to this cut, but now I really like it. My jawline is more noticeable, my neck looks longer, and it's strange... but I actually look taller!"

THE KINDEST CUT OF ALL What makes a crop current? According to most hairstylists: added softness and movement. "Today's cuts have a more feminine feel, with fringe cut in to frame the face," says Craig Lero, owner of N w West Hair Care, in West End, New Jersey. In the eighties, people were into glitzing up hair with mousses and spiking it with sprays and gels. Now, we'll be seeing short hair that's softer, more touchable. The look is looser and less stiff. . . more casual than "done."

FRINGE BENEFITS "My very first. modeling assignment was three years ago with photographer Bruce Weber and designer Azzadine Alaia," remarks Jennifer. "My hair was really long back then, and they wanted to chop it all off. I finally agreed to let them do it . . . and I'm glad that I did. I've kept my hair short ever since." Awad loved Jennifer's look, but he decided to update it a bit. First he cut in a soft fringe at the nape to make her hair interesting to look at from behind. Then he layered her hair all over the head, with longer pieces on top. Next, to bring out her big brown eyes, he pushed her hair forward, framing her forehead with soft curls. To style, Awad finger-combed her hair while blowing it dry. That's all it takes!

"Short hair is me.I've kept it cropped for three years...I feel totally comfortable with it."

THE LAYERED LOOK "When it comes to hair, I think the shorter the better," says Shannon , who's had her top cropped for the past three years. Her boyfriend obviously agrees with her flip philosophy. "Once I had hair extensions put in, and he pleaded with me to take them out." To give her short hair more shape,  A wad first trimmed the fringe in front. Leaving her hair longer at the crown, he added layers at the nape. Finally he blow-dried her hair while finger-combing it forward. Shannon's view on her 'do: "It suits my personality to a tee."

IN THE EYES OF GUYS Short hair projects a definite image. Without opening your mouth, you're making a strong statement. We took an unofficial poll among guys in the hair-care business, asking them what they thought about girls with short hair. Here's what they had to say...

· "Short hair shows flexibility. It's feminine but sporty... a great look for girls who are into being fit." -Awad of Bruno Dessange

"Girls who wear short hair tend to be mo e open-minded and willing to experiment. They're spontaneous and a lot of fun to be around." - Ric Pipino of Pipino-Bueeheri

"Modern. That's the word that comes to mind when I see short hair.

lt tells people that you're secure in yourself. I like that in a girl." -Anthony DeMay, image consultant and hairstylist for Glemby
