Low-Fat Milk Products
Milk products are good sources of protein. However, unlike legumes and like meat and altematives, some milk products are high in saturated fat. For this reason, choose low-fat milk products for heart health.
Most milk products are excellent sources of calcium, a nutrient important for the development and maintenance of strong hones and teeth at all ages. Fortified milk is also a good source of vitamins A and D. Choices include:
VERY LOW-FAT
buttermilk, made from skim milk
evaporated low-fat milk, undiluted
nonfat dry milk, undiluted
skim milk
yogurt, plain (made with nonfat milk)
MODERATELY LOW-FAT
buttermilk, made from whole milk
low-fat milk, 1%
yogurt, plain (made with low-fat milk)
Note: Buttermilk can be a significant source of sodium. Limit your intake of this or select no-salt-added buttermilk. If you are unable to locate it, check with your grocery store manager.
