Fat is Really Pervasive

There's a strong belief that specific pockets of fat can be worked off, exclusive of other fatty areas: "spot reduction." However, a recent study shows this to be untrue.

Thirteen sedentary males were placed on a 20-week exercise program to measure their bodyfat changes. In every case, the subjects lost significant weight, percentage bodyfat, skinfold sums, fat mass and fat cell weight. They also increased their oxygen uptake.

The researchers found that the ratio of subcutaneous fat to total fat was not changed by exercise. So exercise will reduce your overall fat, but· will not selectively reduce your subcutaneous fat. (Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise)
