New feature of Bluesky to "liberate" users

New feature of Bluesky to “liberate” users. Jack Dorsey’s X-rival platform Bluesky announced on Thursday that it will begin allowing its users to set up their own servers to host their data. It is hoped that this move will give users more control over their content.

User data on social media platforms like X (Twitter) is stored by the company and leaving that platform could mean losing one’s connections and content. This alternative model, advocated by many people, including Dorsey, enables platforms to be operated in a decentralized manner, similar to how the internet works.

For example, on the Internet, anyone can set up their own website and choose from many companies for this; They can then move to a different hosting provider if they change their mind.

“We think social media should work the same way,” Bluesky noted in a blog post. The social network explained, “When you sign up for Bluesky, we recommend that Bluesky stores your data by default. However, if you wish, you can choose to have it stored on another company’s server or even on your own server.”

Bluesky also added that users can move their data to another provider at any time “without losing any of their existing posts, likes, or follows.”

Stating that users can have more control over their social media accounts by hosting their data on their own servers, the company also stated that there are “protection measures” to ensure the smooth operation of the network.

Bluesky currently only allows users to host their main accounts on their own servers. The company said that in the next stage, those hosting their own servers will be limited to 10 accounts each, and then the initial level of this usage limit will be increased as “trust and reputation are established” among them.

The company also plans to roll out new tools to independent moderation services to combat abuse of this feature on the platform. This move by Bluesky comes as it began allowing anyone to create an account and join the service in previous weeks. Previously, anyone who wanted to join the platform needed an invitation.

Dorsey, the platform’s founder, says from the beginning he envisioned Bluesky being a new kind of “open and decentralized” form of social media that wouldn’t be controlled by a single company.

Bluesky plans to give its users more freedom by allowing them to move their friends, followers and data collections to other social networks. The technical term for ensuring that social networks can work in harmony with each other is called “federation”.In a cartoon page on its website in previous weeks, Bluesky said it aimed to be “the only social account you need to create.”
