Manisha Koirala begins her second innings

Nepalese beauty Manisha Koirala has just recently been in New Delhi to promote the ongoing South Asian film festival. One of the most the most popular actresses of the 90s, Manisha is now rarely seen on the big screen. When asked about the reason behind her sudden and long disappearance from the screen she says, "I took a break. This is my 17th year in the industry.

So, I took time off to do other personal things like my spiritual stuff." The Ghai discovery of the Ilu Ilu girl in his 'Saudagar' once worked with industry heavyweights like Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Mani Ratnam, besides of course Subhash Ghai, now seems to be out of the industry. Her last hit was 'Company' back in 2002. Since then her fans have been eagerly awaiting her comeback. She denies the media hunch of her entry on the small screen through a daily soap. She wonders if the growing popularity of television screen is meant for each and every entrant.

She has no such idea. Will she enter politics following in the footsteps of her family who have been very thick in the Himalayan kingdom's politics? She says no for the moment though one never knows not about the future. Politics isn't her cup of tea. She prefers Indian movies including from South India besides those of Nepal. But, she has no special love for Hollywood flicks unlike her other Bollywood colleagues though she has had taken training in filmmaking abroad. Anyway, she has announced her comeback this month only. Let's hope that she will succeed in her second innings, too.

Where have you been since your 'Company' in 2002?
I needed a break in my filmi career. This is my 17th year in the film industry and I have done over 60 films. After all, I cannot work continuously.

When are you coming back on the screen?

Now, my sabbatical is over. So, you will notice me soon, maybe next year. However, I will do only one or two films a year.

What's your shooting agenda now?

I am starting shooting from November for an unnamed film in the UK, being directed by ad filmmaker Rohit.

What's this movie all about?

Yes, it's about the film industry in the 1930s.

What's your role?

I have a very interesting role in it.

Are you doing any non-Hindi movie?

As of now, there is no such movie.

What about taking up a Nepalese movie?

A Nepali-Indian venture is exciting and I have done some preliminary work on that. I cannot say more than this at this time.

Any plan to direct a movie?

Of course, but this depends on finding an exciting script and someone to back me. I had got an offer from a big production house to direct a film, but the project never took off.

Any plan to follow in the footsteps of your family?

No, not at this time though who knows what may happen in the future.
