We are in show business and faces are our first impression
Manisha Koirala, the Nepalese beauty will be seen after a long hiatus in the forthcoming entertainer film Sirf - Life Looks Greener on the Other Side. Directed by Raajatesh Nayar, erstwhile assistant to Raj Kumar Santoshi, Sirf is presented by corporate house Pyramid Saimira.
The film revolves around four couples played by Kay Kay Menon with Manisha Koirala, Sonali Kulkarni with Ranvir Shorey, Parveen Dabbas with Rituparna Sengupta and Ankur Khanna with Nauheed Cyrusi. They all belong to different levels of society and each couple has their own problems to deal with, but somewhere they all come across each other on the cross road of life. En-route the film has humour, rib ticklers and also pathos at times.
What is your character in Sirf?
I play the character of Devika who is married to Kay Kay Menon. I own an ad agency. My character is very lonely because her husband is too busy with his work, but she is strong too. She holds her own even when odds are totally against her. She is sympathetic and understanding too.
Isn't that what you are in reality too?
Yes, I am strong woman but I am not completely Devika. In some places I do connect to the character and that's about it. The film is about a vacuum in people's life, how they think that everybody else has more then they do. I have never had that kind of misconception.
Why did you agree to work with a new director?
I worked with Raajatesh during Lajja, so technically I know him. He is a very good and clear cut director. He has very clear vision of what he wants. Although he had trained under Santoshi, his style of filmmaking is very different. I think that Sirf is closer to Life in a Metro than any of films made by Santoshi. Because of his training and exposure, Raajatesh has shown a lot of maturity in handling the subject.
What would you say about other co stars?
I have worked with Kay Kay, Parveen and Ranbir. While Kay Kay is an extremely strong but subtle artiste, Parveen is extremely expressive and casual about it. Ranvir is good. They all have their own style and each is very good but Kay Kay is brilliant. He can enact the most intense scene without doing any nautanki or loud histrionics.
How important is it for an actor to look good even when they grow older?
Looking good comes with the territory. We are in show business and faces are our first impression.
You are now associated with yoga? Was that also a step towards looking good?
(Laughs) I am associated with this wonderful place called 'Oneness University' in Chennai. That is a beautiful place and what I have learnt there, has made me into a seeker. All the questions are answered. I am happy that I went there.
What are your forthcoming projects?
I am in talks with many makers for various international projects. I will choose with care. Chehra is on the floors. In this film I play the role of a complete diva. Sirf - Life Looks Greener on the Other Side is releasing on 25th April.
You have done acting and production. Any plans of direction?
Definitely, I do want to direct films. But right now my priorities are different. May be in a year or two I will start direction too. But believe me, being an actor is the most blessed position because they are the most pampered lot.
Why have you shifted to realistic cinema?
Don't you want to do song and dance routines? Of course I do, but somewhere I started getting such roles. I am enjoying it right now, but Sirf is very much mainstream cinema, with songs, comic situations and a popular storyline. It is a good entertainer. It is another thing that I have not done song dance routine in it.
What is your entertainment regime?
I enjoy traveling. I love Europe the most.
