Tabu, one of the most sought-after actresses in Bollywood, after playing secondary roles in film like `Biwi No.1' and `Hum Saath Saath Hein' is making a full-fledged comeback in Esmayeel Shroff's soon-to-be-released `Tarkeib'.
In `Tarkeib', a suspense thriller, Tabu is paired with newcomer model-turned-actor Milind Soman. The film also stars Shilpa Shetty, Nana Patekar, Aditya Panscholi and Ashutosh Rana.
As models are deemed by filmfolks as `wooden actors', Tabu's decision to work with Milind raised many eyebrows. People wondered whether it was good to pitch an experienced actress like Tabu against a newcomer. Tabu, however, had no reservations, as she liked her part in the movie.
As a newcomer Tabu stepped into the filmdom with some inconsequential films like `Prem', `Vijaypath' and `Pehla Pehla Pyar', all of which failed to give her a standing in front of the camera. But these films spruced her for what was to follow soon.
Very soon, Tabu was signed for some good South Indian and Hindi films. Tabu herself admits humbly that it was working with the South Indian director Priyadarshan in his `Kala Pani' and `Virasat', that `played a very crucial role in grooming and growing of Tabu, the actress.'
Achievement actually came her way when she bagged the National Award for `the Best Actress' for her role as a Punjabi Kudi in Gulzar's `Maachis'. A few years later she again cut a dash for herself in Gulzar's `Hu Tu Tu' by lapping up the Filmfare Critics Award' for `the Best Actress' and also the National Award.
Today, some of the best directors like - Gulzar, Mani Ratnam, Govind Nihalani are all praises for Tabu. And there are big producers making a beeline to her doorsteps to sign her. Very selectively and with great caution, Tabu has signed some of the good projects thus leaving riff-raff to so-called `glamour dolls' of the Bollywood.
Among her forthcoming films, Tabu is very much excited about director Mahesh Manjrekar's `Astitva', which she thinks `is a very strong subject sending out messages about identity, place and position of women in India today'. She is also pairing up with Manoj Bajpai in `Ghaath' by Aakash Deep and `Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar' by Hansal Mehta.
No doubt, Tabu is basking in the glory that her success has showered upon her. But despite the rave reviews she has been getting she still maintains a modest opinion of herself and firmly believes that there's still much more to be done.
"My first priority", Tabu reveals, "is to be known as a perfect actress, much better than what I am today. I am not interested in the numbers game, the glamour and stardom that goes with it. I am only interested in Tabu, the actress within me and I will not rest till I find her."
