I am ready for drama now
On Vacations
“I am happiest when I am away from Mumbai. It’s a need to unwind and rejuvenate. I get to do simple things which would be difficult here, like walking on the streets, going for movies and grocery shopping. In California, I live with my cousin, so it’s a second home for me. Everything is familiar from the washing machine to the other systems in the house. I hate cooking; I can’t even boil an egg. But I am well looked after there.”
On New York
“It’s a city surrounded by skyscrapers, noise and people. I love the independent feeling New York gives. It’s fun having a cup of coffee all on my own. But there’s a big Indian population there. People recognise me. I stayed in New York for the longest time while I was shooting for The Namesake. Taxi drivers wouldn’t take money from me.”
On working in spurts
“It’s not a modus operandi. I do a project if I feel 100 per cent convinced about it. There could be various reasons for me to accept or reject a film. Not that I don’t like making a fast buck. But I will not trade my beliefs for money. It need not be something of great social relevance. Whenever I’ve done things without conviction, I’ve regretted it. I am ready for drama now. I want to express something intense and weighty.”
On overcoming her difficulties
“Some things were very difficult early in my career. Like during the first schedule of Prem, there was this dance scene choreographed beautifully by Sarojji (Khan). It required me to heave my bosom heavily and continuously. It was so uncomfortable. I’d start and stop after two seconds. I’d say ‘Mujh se nahin ho raha hai (I can’t do it)’. I just couldn’t flaunt my body. But eventually I overcame it. But Chinni Prakashji made me comfortable whilst shooting the Ruk ruk ruk (Vijaypath) number. He drew me out of my shell and made sure I enjoyed it.”
On make-up
“I find it difficult to apply make-up. I find doing my eyebrows painful. So how will I ever undergo any surgery? It’s not as though I’m going to be paid 50 crores for a film that I should put myself through all this. I can imagine life without the spotlight. Even now, I take off on a sabbatical. I don’t crave it. I enjoy being here because it’s a fantastic platform to express myself. It’s the only life I have known. Performing is something that consumes me, it defines my identity. But if it’s not there, I will not go crazy. But I know it’s never going to end for me. Acting doesn’t come with a shelf life.”
On friends
“I make one friend every week and have friends all over the world. I’ve never thought before falling in love, or making friendships, or doing a film. You can’t hold on to fears. Of course one does get hurt, you go through stuff. But life is about people, you grow with them and you grow through them. I have been working with men. I always had women around me at home, so having male friends created a balance. They were instrumental in helping me grow. They gave me so much love, affection and protection. They spoil me silly. I’m still a kid for them.”
