Meera set to release music album

Versatile Pakistani actress Meera claims she is all set to step into the music industry and has announced her latest feat of recording a music album named ‘Mausiqui’. The music album is being recorded in India’s entertainment capital of Mumbai.

Meera expressed hope that the album which means ‘music’ in Urdu will strike a chord with the general population. Speaking to the media, she proclaimed her love for music and said that the tones and lyrics of the songs for the album will be finalised once she has practised singing.

Taking a leaf out of the recent success of her rival counterpart, Veena Malik, Meera is also gearing up to create ripples with a reality show.

Meera pursuing an Oscar

She is one of the most popular and controversial stars of Lollywood and now the star is back to entertain her fans with yet another skill she is set to add to her portfolio. Yes, film star Meera has officially become a director and a producer and is currently working to finalize the agenda of her first film as a director and producer.

Oscar, the name of the film has already been registered with the Pakistan Film Producers Association and has been approved by the Ministry of Culture and other government bodies that have placed Meera in the list of filmmakers. A source close to the actor told The Express Tribune that Meera has stepped into the field to give Pakistan and the local audience a good film.

The film is set to be bilingual with both English and Urdu incorporated in it and it has been decided that the it will be shot both in Pakistan and abroad. The star will be leaving for Bangladesh shortly to find locations for her directorial debut.

However, at the moment, Meera has decided not to share too many details before the right time. The actor has refused to reveal the cast. A source close to the star said that Meera herself will be playing an important role in the film.

The story of the film revolves around an actor who wants to become the best actor in the world and hence, focuses on the artiste’s struggle and efforts to achieve an Oscar. “One of the special features of the film will be its music. The best possible means will be used to prepare the best kind of music for the film,” said a member of the project.

It is important to note that Meera is not the first actor in Lollywood who has decided to become a filmmaker. Stars like Reema have also taken up their directorial skills. Reema played director for two films and her recent one called Love Main Gum is yet to be released. The film was initially called Kitni Haseen Hain Zindagi and is said to have Indian comedian Johnny Lever playing an important role.

The film by Meera is scheduled to be completed soon and if all goes well and according to the plans, the production will be released by the end of this year.
When The Express Tribune contacted her to confirm the news, she gave no details of her upcoming endeavour but added that she hopes the film will get a good response from the audience and help bring them back to theatres.

While Lollywood actors are stepping forward into filmmaking, film critics believe that they should not make the films a one-man show. An office-bearer of Pakistan Film Producer Association said, “It is really good that Lollywood actors are coming forward to make films but they should not keep everything to themselves. You can give direction but try and get a producer for your film. So many times it happens that a name of the film is announced and registered and the film fails to be released in years. But despite everything, we wish Meera the best of luck and hope her film gets released soon and gets a good response from the audience.”

Film critic Zahid Akkasi said that a good filmmaker should have a good know-how of how the camera works. “No director can make a good film without a good camera man. Announcing the name of a film is not enough. Especially when you are handling a project all alone, it becomes difficult for you to see all the aspects and do the justice with them. Nonetheless, all of us want good movies to be made and one can only hope that Meera will come up with something original,” he added.

Meera’s another scandal comes to surface

Actress Meera’s another scandal has come to surface. Differences with producer Suhail Khan are talk of the town. Meera started production career from drama serial ‘Iqra’ in which she also performed as an actress. According to sources, all financing of the drama serial was made by Suhail Khan. When marriage scandal of Meera came to surface, Suhail took back recordings of drama from Meera. Suhail said that due to Meera’s scandal, his drama can earn a bad name, so he doesn’t like to add her name as a producer of the drama.

Meera gets her role

And then we have news that Meera is all set to blaze the mini screen. Yes, the gorgeous Meera has agreed to appear in a serial for television. Plans are said to be afoot for the prestigious project, which is sure to give her career a boost. Not that things are beyond repair in the film arena for they are not. It looks like there just might be a rainbow to look up at for Meera, With the super success of "Mujhey Jeenay Do", which is said to have been give a very good response on the box office, Meera is once again back in top form.

This much needed hit, in addition to having the delectable Ms. M heaving a sigh of relief, is sure to have given a much needed breather to Javed Shaikh too, who in the wake of the bad showing of his last few movies, was also banking on the film, as was its leading lad Babar Ali. Let’s see who in the long run turns out to benefit most from this much needed turn of box office fate.

Remma’s steps into view

With news of Meera taking her act to the small screen, word has it that Reema too is pulling strings for a telly debut. Our mole in Lollywood tells us that the pretty few producers and reportedly there are plans that the starni will be appearing in the telly adaptation of a foreign flick. While we haven’t been able to discover the name of the film we have learnt that it is a famous Hollywood potboiler starring Julia Roberts. Pretty Woman? Keep guessing.

Vying for vocalists

The Gallop Poll in Pakistan recently conducted a survey here regarding the most popular male singers voted by the people were Mehdi Hassan, Waris Beg, Ali Haider, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Abrar-ul-Haq. The female singers were Noor Jehan, Lata(?), Naheed Akhtar, Shazia Manzoor and Humaira Arshad. Interestingly enough Noor Jehan and Mehdi Hassan have been at the top for years while the other singers change according to their popularity graph.

A Gallop survey conducted 20 years ago had Mehdi Hassan, Alam Lohar, Inayat Hussain Bhatti and Muhammad Rafi(?) as the best singers and Noor Jehan, Surraiya Multanikar, Lata and Mahnaz at the top of the list. How Indian singers, Lata and Rafi, got into the Pakistan Gallop Poll singers, Lata and Rafi, got into the Pakistan Gallop Poll attention to music as well.

The surprising thing about the recent polls was the difference of choice amongst men and women. Waris Beg and Abrar-ul-Haq were chosen by the women, whereas Mehdi Hassan and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan were popular among men. Men preferred the voices of Noor Jehan and Lata over Naheed Akhtar and Shazia Manzoor who were more popular with women. Affiliated with Gallop International, Gallop Pakistan represents a cross-section of households belonging to different regional and social backgrounds.

Celebrating friendship

The two Pakistani films Nikah and Ghunghat were presented on an official level at the SAARC Film festival held in Sri Lanka, in addition to two other unofficial entries, Inteha and Zargul. Ahad Malik, Shehzad Rafiq and Reema comprised the members of the official delegation which attended the festival on behalf of Pakistan. It was the first time that Sri Lanka has hosted the SAARC festival with Indian and Pakistan entries.

Bangladesh presented only one feature film Monsoon, while Maldives, Bhutan and Nepal presented their documentary films in the festival. As a sign of goodwill, the Pakistani delegation gifted both the films Ghunghat and Nikah to Nepal on the friendship basis and for future film related business with the SAARC countries.

The revenge of the pen-pushers

With more and more actors going behind the camera, Mahnoor Balouch has also taken the plunge by directing Lamhay, her first serial in collaboration with Media Vision Marketing launched at a hotel last week.

Perhaps more interesting than the actual event itself which was about two hours too late was the quest9ion and answer session during which many controversial queries were targeted at Mahnoor. The line of fire was mainly from a particular section of the Press which not only grilled the debut director but other members of the Lamhay cast. Nighat Chauhdry in particular. However, when Ayaz Khan came to the rescue of the poor model-cum-actress-cum-director, he too had to sample a taste of their wrath. Makes one think what it was that made the concerned pen-pushers so angst-ridden.

‘Zargul’ Rakes in more awards

Every Peerzada outing is always something to sit up and take notice – which is the kind f reaction the long-awaited Zargul induced when it was finally shown to selected audiences in Karachi and Lahore after an unusually long production spell that lasted some ten years! The ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ of the viewing public were enough to cast a favourable vote for the film which traces a tribal Pathan-turned-outlaw’s fight for justice before succumbing to the forces of corruption and evil.

On a more cheerful note, the news is that Zargul has awarded a Best Director award in festival held in the city of Toronto. The award went to Salman Peerzada, the film’s director, and was one of the five nominations that the film had been chosen for which included Best Film, Best Actor, Best actress, best Director and Best Supporting Actor. Zargul has raked in awards in festivals held internationally in the past. More entries lined up for it are at the annual film festival in Norway, the Iranian Isfahan film festival and one later this year to be held in New Delhi.
