Urmila Matondkar turns 37

Bollywood actor Urmila Matondkar, who became a rage after her RANGEELA performance in the 1995 film, turns one year older on 4th February. She becomes 37.

The dancing beauty of Bollywood, who will also be remembered for her critically acclaimed portrayal of the characters of psycho killers, is busy these days judging a show titled- 'Chak Dhoom Dhoom'.

Interestingly, it is speculated that the actor who has passed her peak years in B-town, knocked out the HISSS girl, Mallika Sherawat to become the judge of the show, media reports said.

Earlier, she had also judged the popular celebrity dance reality show called 'Jhalak Dikhla Jaa'.

Urmila Replaces Mallika In 'Chak Dhoom Dhoom'

According to hearsays, all is not well between Bollywood hottie Mallika Sherawat and the creators of the TV dance reality show 'Chak Dhoom Dhoom'.

During the last month, Sherawat has been roped in as the judge for 'Chak Dhoom Dhoom'.
Hardly three weeks later, Sherawat has been chucked out as the show's judge, and substituted by another Bollywood actress, Urmila Matondkar.

The reasons for the actress's rejection appears to be that she had not been showing her keen interest to the show and reportedly throwing lots of tantrums.

It's no secret that the actress was concurrently shooting an item song for Bazmee's upcoming flick, featuring Akshay Kumar in the lead.

As per sources, Mallika agreed to the item song regardless of having already committed to the reality show and handling both the shoots simultaneously was becoming too hectic for her.
Mallika herself said that she shot for the show for 15 long hours one day and shot for the item song the next day.

"It was getting very tedious and I didn't want to harm either of the shoots," she added.
As a result, the channel began finding for a substitution and shortly appointed Urmila Matondkar, a humdinger of a dancer.

Urmila Matondkar adds glamour to Nepal’s gaming industry

Bollywood’s oomph girl Urmila Matondkar, who joined the ranks of the mega-billion film industry’s sex symbols with director Ram Gopal Varma’s 1995 hit ‘Rangeela’, now has a new role lined up in Nepal - adding glamour to Nepal’s gaming industry.

The actress, who’s known as much for her versatile acting as her sizzling guest appearances in films like ‘China Gate’, where she outshone the leading ladies, will make a special appearance Saturday at Kathmandu’s newest casino, Casino Shangri-la, to inaugurate the gala opening.

Focusing on wooing visitors from India and Bangladesh, Casino Shangri-la is aiming to create its unique identity among the capital’s seven casinos by offering glamour and entertainment along with gaming.

‘In India, you can’t meet celebrities just like that,’ says Shalini Wadhwa, chief executive officer at Casino Shangri-la. ‘But here, you can.’

Guests at the casino can have a photo session with Urmila and lively interaction. After the grand opening, Wadhwa plans to get more celebs from India.

Wadhwa, who also runs two magazines in Nepal, Boss and the Voice of Women, and has a network of contacts extending from New Delhi to Sri Lanka, roped in mutual friends to invite Urmila and since the actress was free, she consented.

Nepal’s tourism industry, hit by a 10-year-old communist insurgency and then, last year, acute political turmoil after King Gyanendra seized power, got a respite this summer after the king stepped down and the new government and the rebels called a ceasefire.

‘Starting from Saturday, it’s going to be a long weekend in India with Tuesday being a national holiday there because of the Indian Independence Day,’ says Wadhwa.

Nepal, India’s closest neighbour, is already reaping the fruits of the vacation.

‘The flights (to Nepal) are full, the hotels are booked, Casino Shangri-la already has a sizeable group of Indian visitors,’ says Wadhwa.

‘We are hoping Urmila Matondkar’s visit will also send out the message to India that Nepal is a safe destination once again.’

While people would flock to the casino to see the Bollywood star, one of the reasons why Urmila came to Nepal is to visit the famed Pashupatinath temple, one of the holiest sites for Hindus, Buddhists and Jains alike.

The actress, who arrived Friday evening and would depart Sunday, would visit the shrine, which, before her has been visited by other Indian celebrities like Jaya Bachchan and her son, Abhishek.

Nepal under ceasefires exerts a strong draw on Bollywood. Three years ago, during the last truce, Bollywood superstar Govinda and Priyanka Chopra came to Nepal for a shooting while Karisma Kapoor sought a brief low profile respite here from the troubles in her career as well as love life.

Hrithik Roshan's latest fan is Urmila Matondkar's five-year-old nephew.

Hrithik Roshan has a way with children. Although the actor is unaware of it, he has become a huge favourite of Urmila Matondkar's family.

"It's all because of Krissh," laughs Urmila. "My five-year-old nephew Anurag, with his two missing front teeth, thinks he's Krissh! He's completely taken in with the character, mask, cape et al. I don't think any character has made such an impact on children until now."

In fact, the entire Matondkar family had to watch Krissh several times so that the little fan could get enough of his icon. So when does Urmila intend on introducing Anurag to his super-hero? "I'm thinking about it. But I'm seriously worried that Anurag will refuse to recognise Hrithik as Krissh. So close is his identification with Krissh that he would probably refuse to accept that Hrithik played the character. I suppose that's the ultimate compliment to the actor," says Urmila.

And this isn't the first time that Hrithik has made an impact on young impressionable minds. As Shabana Azmi recalls, "This happened when Kaho Na…Pyar Hai was released. Sridevi and Boney Kapoor's first-born Jhanvi was just a toddler then…. and she fell completely in love with Hrithik! She had packed this little suitcase and she'd go and stand in her balcony and wave to every plane that passed by. She would tell everyone that Hrithik was going to come out of the plane and take her away."

Hrithik has always been pleased about his popularity with kids. "It feels good to be liked by children. Children are my most loyal fans. Both Koi… Mil Gaya and Krissh appealed to the child within me. I know how hard it is to be a child," says Hrithik. "As a child, I was shy and introverted. I couldn't speak properly to strangers. For a long time, I couldn't even fix an appointment with a doctor. My mother or sister would do that for me. In school, I kept to myself. I was always left out of all cultural activities. I had to work hard to break the barriers that I had built around myself to be competent at my job as an actor."

Urmila gets injured while exercising

Urmila Matondkar recently injured herself while trying out a new form of exercise. Her friends are teasing her that it's a sign she shouldn't exercise at all!

The lovely Urmila Matondkar is not socialising too much these days. The reason for this is that she has injured her ankle and has been advised rest. “I was trying out a form of exercise called spinning and I sprained my ankle badly,” says the actress, adding, “Now I have to stay at home.”

But she’s far from being depressed – nothing can keep the Matondkar babe down, it seems. “The best thing about this is that all my friends are making it a point to visit me and I’m having a great time at home. So something good has come of it after all.”

Interestingly, with that perfect body, one would think Urmila is quite into fitness. Clears Urmila, “I’ve never been into exercising, and that is what my friends are teasing me about. In fact, Manish Malhotra actually joked that it’s a sign from above that I shouldn’t even attempt exercising.” With her next film Speed , co-starring Zayed Khan and Aftab Shivdasani, all set to release soon, let’s wish the actress a speedy recovery!

Urmila as a 50-plus diva

Urmila Matondkar is all set to essay a 50-plus woman who lives life king (err) queen size in a castle and wears the most expensive clothing and basks in wealth. This film will naturally be another version of the blockbuster film ‘Karz’ that released more than a couple of decades back.

Urmila is said to have mentioned that the character that she will be portraying will be ageless, stylish and that she will be a very exclusive heiress and that her clothes and body language will reflect the glamour that personifies the lady. She would be seen riding on horse backs and flying planes, not to mention the gambling nights in the casinos.

Manish Malhotra the man behind many splendid costumes will be working on the task of designing clothes for Urmila in this yet-to-be-titled film. It is rumored that a budget amounting to several crores has been set aside for the wardrobe alone. The designer has been asked to tailor some never-seen-before attire.

The director of this flick Satish Kaushik is believed to have commented that this film will see Urmila as the epitome of glamour and high flying existence. It is also rumored that this would be the most expensively done female character in a Hindi film. In this film Urmila is believed to sing and shake a leg with Himesh for a couple of songs.

It was Simi Garewal who played Kamimi in Subash Ghai’s older version of ‘Karz’.

Urmila says OK for Manish Malhotra

Sony Entertainment's popular dance contest "Boogie Woogie" is back, and kicking off the inaugural episode was none other than Urmila Matondkar.

Urmila laughes pleasurably at the experience she had.

"I had so much fun on the show. I normally don't go on television," confesses Urmila who's not seen on too many talk shows unless it is for a very close friend like Manish Malhotra.

"That's precisely why I went to 'Boogie Woogie'. I'd do television for a friend. And both the hosts on 'Boogie Woogie', Javed Jaffrey and Ravi Behl, are friends. With Javed I have gone on many live concerts including my first world tour after 'Rangeela' with Shah Rukh (Khan) and Aamir (Khan). That was a truckload of fun," Urmila told IANS.

Ravi brings back fond memories.

"I did my first lead as a heroine in 'Narasimha' with Ravi. He is a fabulous dancer. And to be on a dance show with him is a delightful experience."

On "Boogie Woogie" Friday, Urmila danced to the theme from her film "Ek Hasina Thi".

"The first episode is a thriller special. And the experience was thrilling," she says.

Urmila had herself a ball interacting with the contestants.

"They are all so gifted! And so well prepared! It is easy for people to sneer and say these kids are just copying acknowledged dancers and dances. But that's easier said and done. I love dancing. Even I had my role models when I came in. Today I am flattered when I see so many newcomers copying me."

Urmila to do a song scene for Lajja

Rajkumar Santoshi has once again roped in the Chhamma Chhamma girl Urmila Matondkar, after China Gate, for a special song in his forthcoming film Lajja.

The movie stars Rekha, Madhuri Dixit, Mahima Chaudhary and Manisha Koirala in the lead. Aishwaya Rai and Sonali Bendre make special appearances.

Such special appearances by top actresses seems to have become a trend in the Hindi films.
And why not? The song-items on Mamta Kulkarni in Ghatak, Urmila Matondkar in China Gate, Madhuri Dixit in Bade Miya Chhote Miya, Sushmita Sen in Fiza, Raveena Tandon in Khauff and Shilpa Shetty in Shool have all been big hits with the audiences.

Urmila no more dependent on Ramu!

Bollywood is abuzz with the news that Ram Gopal Varma and Urmila Matondkar have finally decided to go their own ways.

Grapevine has it that Urmila confided in her good friend Kajol that she was "tired of the constant probes by the media at her personal relations with Ramu”.

Ramu too seems to be looking beyond Urmi now for his future projects.

Ramgopal has played an important role in making Urmila what she is today. But she seems to be facing an image problem due to doing almost same kind of roles in Ramu’s movies. So it’s good for her career that she stops being dependent on Ramu’s movies for survival.

How far will Urmila go without the support of Ramu? Only time will tell.
