Internet citizenship versus nation states. With the widespread use of internet technologies and their penetration into every aspect of individuals’ lives over time, the digitalization process has also accelerated. In this process, individuals began to socialize on the internet through tools such as games, forums, instant messaging applications, especially social media applications, and today we meet many of our basic needs through internet technologies and we live in an age where many things about humans are rapidly digitalized.
Today, there is also a concept used for people who socialize on the internet, spend a significant part of their lives interacting with internet applications, and meet a significant part of their needs through the internet: “internet citizens”.
It is also useful to emphasize the relationship between internet technologies and globalization within the framework of the concept of internet citizenship. Globalization is important as a concept that emphasizes the disappearance of social, economic and political borders and the emergence of more intertwined, mutually influencing structures. In this context, internet technologies are one of the most important driving forces of globalization.
Blockchain technologies have a very important place in the erosion of the borders of the nation state and the development of globalization and the concept of internet citizenship. With Blockchain technology-based Bitcoin, we have achieved a “fully” digital representation of “money” or “value”. Bitcoin is a very unique example of digital property as a means of “value” that is significantly independent of real world dynamics, both in terms of its structure and operation.
Blockchain technologies enable the use of any human asset, such as games, social media, etc. It has provided significant convenience in presenting representations of avatars used in applications with reference to online profiles, tools, elements (any content) and real world entities in the digital world, with registration of ownership, on an online platform.
This will add a different dimension to the concept of digitalization and virtual reality in terms of the creation of digital identities, other digital assets associated with these identities, and ownership records associated with these digital assets. The concept of metaverse also emerges as an important concept in this context.
