Keira Knightley: Ignorance Is Bliss
Keira Knightley is gorgeous. Not only that, she's a pretty darn fine actress too! And if you needed any more proof of that, why not go and see those Pirates of the Caribbean.
What was it like taking on the character of Elizabeth Swann again?
It was great, it was quite scary. I’ve never done a sequel before and I've always said of any of the characters that I've played that - if I played them now - I'd play them completely differently. It was weird trying to find a continuity with a character that I'd played when I was 17. We had big problems because she was quite black and white in the first film, very strait-laced, and we couldn't really see how to carry her on – so, we went off into a grungier look for he. That was really exciting - taking the character and making her grow up. I don’t know if there’s any continuity, but it was fun!
You don’t have to wear a corset for as much as you did in Pirates one, was that a condition of coming back this time?
No, I love the idea that I could say I would only come back if you don't let me wear a corset but it wasn't. They really liked the more action-based side of Elizabeth from the first film and apparently that's what little girls really responded to, so they decided to take her off in that vibe. And, I had nothing to do with it - or the kiss (with Johnny Depp) either - although I was really happy that there was one!
How did you keep a straight face during your funnier scenes, especially with Johnny Depp?
Don't look at Johnny - ignore him at all costs! He was actually quite nice because he wouldn't do the full Jack Sparrow routine if the camera was on you. But as soon as the camera turns around you couldn't do any off camera lines because you were laughing too much. There will be a lot of out-takes of everybody pissing themselves in the middle of a scene. I remember the crew standing around with tears running down their faces, desperately trying to keep it in as we were filming.
What was it like filming Pirates 2 then Pirates 3 straight afterwards?
It got really confusing towards the end of shooting because that’s when we really crossed over with 3. I did some of the press in LA without having sent the film at all, and couldn’t remember what was in 2 and what was in 3, and therefore had no idea what the storyline was so it was lovely seeing it and going, ‘Oh right, that’s how it all works.’
Are you looking forward to filming Pirates 3?
We're going to be shooting in a place called Palmdale, which is about two and a half hours outside LA. It's not the prettiest place on Earth but apparently they've built some amazing sets.
It's been really great to have a break. We've been working for over a year on it and everybody needed a breather. The time off has been fantastic, but we're all really excited to get back. There are some great sequences in number three that we've already shot, but we've got half the movie still to do. I'm not going to say anything more about it because I don't want to give it away!
You’re come so far, so fast. Has it been difficult achieving such success maintaining a normal life?
I haven’t really stopped working and, although I’m back in London now, I’m working on another film. I’m an awful one for burying my head in the sand. Ignorance is bliss and I try not to notice anything. I suppose that’s how I cope. Although, it is rather strange - people are calling my name in the street, which is a little bit odd. But I can live a relatively normal life – even with photographers following me around.
Despite being so famous now, you’re still very relaxed and open with the media, how come?
Am I? I don’t read anything written about me. Only because it would be unhelpful – anything nice is probably too nice, and anything nasty is probably too nasty. So either way I just figure, again, ignorance is bliss. So, I have no idea what I’m saying really. I’m always getting quoted back at myself and thinking ‘Oh no, did I really say that?’
How does it feel when people call you anorexic?
I can safely say I’m not. It was in my family hugely. My grandmother and great-grandmother suffered from it and a lot of friends at school suffered with it as well, so I don’t think it’s something to be taken lightly and I don’t.
I’m very sure I don’t have it. I suppose in a way it’s good it’s out there and people are talking about it.
It’s quite interesting because it’s normally high achieving young woman who suffer from it, I guess control freaks. So, it’s understandable why you’d associate that with high-achieving people in the film industry. I’m not saying there aren’t people who suffer from it, because I’m sure there are. I’m not one of them.
