Bill Macy is still most recognized for his starring role on the long-running comedy series “Maude,” opposite Bea Arthur. Macy starred on the show for six years, playing Maude's husband, Walter.
Macy's feature film work includes Harold Ramis' “Analyze This,” with Billy Crystal and Robert De Niro; “Me, Myself and I,” with George Segal and JoBeth Williams; “The Doctor,” starring William Hurt; Carl Reiner's “Sibling Rivalry”; “Bad Medicine,” with Alan Arkin; Richard Benjamin's “My Favorite Year,” starring Peter O'Toole; Carl Reiner's “The Jerk,” with Steve Martin; and Mel Brooks' “The Producers,” in which he made his feature film debut.
In addition to his role on “Maude,” Macy's television credits include such longform projects as “Columbo: It's All In the Game,” “Perry Mason: The Case of the Murdered Madam,” “The Day the Bubble Burst” and “The Scarlett O'Hara War.” He has also guest starred on numerous series, including “ER,” “My Wife and Kids,” “Touched By an Angel,” “Providence,” “Seinfeld,” “Chicago Hope,” “NYPD Blue” and “Diagnosis Murder,” to name only a few.
An accomplished stage actor, Macy has appeared on Broadway in such plays as Neil Simon's “I Ought to Be in Pictures,” “The Roast,” “Once More, With Feeling” and “Mrs. Reardon Drinks a Little.” His off-Broadway work includes “Oh! Calcutta,” “The Threepenny Opera,” “The Balcony,” “Awake and Sing!” and “America Hurrah.” On the London stage, he reprised his roles in “Oh! Calcutta” and “America Hurrah,” and was also seen in “The Tempest.”
