Meta seems determined to expand the Metaverse universe

Meta (Facebook), one of the world’s largest technology companies, continues to insist on the Metaverse universe, which many technology giants have given up on.

While Meta aims to reach a large audience on the social networking platform, it is reshaping the virtual reality world called Horizon Worlds. The company now aims to create a platform that includes more video games. Horizon Worlds is a virtual reality social network that allows users to create avatars and interact with other players. This platform has caused a loss of tens of billions of dollars in cost to the Reality Labs unit so far.

Vishal Shah, Meta’s Vice President of Metaverse, stated that in order to make Horizon Worlds more attractive, its in-house studio called Ouro Interactive will now focus on first-party virtual reality games. Super Rumble, the studio’s first VR game, is a shooter game and has just been released. This game features better graphics and fidelity compared to other VR games built on Horizon Worlds.

Shah stated that this video game will also be one of the first VR video games that Meta will test when launching the mobile version of Horizon Worlds. Shah stated that the next generation of Horizon Worlds will be “an absolutely new world.”

While Meta is producing more video games for Horizon Worlds, it is also revamping the VR platform’s infrastructure. Shah informed that the infrastructure has been renewed, which will support higher quality and more complex games and provide more tools for third-party developers. Additionally, when Meta releases a mobile version of Horizon Worlds, the app is planned to serve as a bridge between smartphones and the company’s Quest VR headsets.

These developments come at a time when Meta’s Reality Labs unit has recently suffered a major financial loss. While Reality Labs generated $276 million in revenue, it had an operating loss of $3.7 billion. This unit has lost $21 billion since the beginning of 2022. This shows that the total loss of the unit established in 2020 exceeds 40 billion dollars.
