Dito Montiel (Directed by / Written by) leapt into public view in January 2006, when his first film, A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, became an early hit at that year's Sundance Film Festival. Based on his bestselling memoir of the same name, it won him a warm critical reception as well as Sundance's Dramatic Directing Award. In addition, the film itself was nominated for Sundance's Grand Jury Prize.
A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints went on to receive further acclaim, including the Criticsâ™ Week Award and the Isvema Award at the Venice Film Festival. In addition, it received nominations from Film Independent's Spirit Awards, including best screenplay, and nominations for the grand prizes at the Gijon, Deauville and Flanders international film festivals.
Born to a Nicaraguan father and Irish mother, Montiel was raised in Astoria, Queens. In the late 1980s, he was a hardcore punk-rock musician, first with a band called Major Conflict and then with Gutterboy, and was signed by Geffen Records. He toured the country back and forth in leaky vans, fell in love with a girl in Virginia named Annette, got KO'd in the first round of the 1998 Golden Gloves tournament and, in 2006, released a self-titled solo album, "Dito Montiel," through Rhino Records. In addition to his music and filmmaking, Montiel has continued writing. Thunder's Mouth / Avalon published his most recent book, a novel titled "Eddie Krumble Is the Clapper," in 2006. Montiel is currently developing The Son of No One, based on a book he wrote of the same title, which he will direct for Anonymous Content, and The Brotherhood of the Rose, for Thunder Road and Warner Bros. Both projects have Channing Tatum set to star.
