Halle Berry BBC Interview

I have felt myself as a fierce tiger when whip at hand

An Oscar winner for her performance in Monster's Ball, American actress Halle Berry has not stood still to bask in that glory. Die Another Day, X-Men 2, Gothika and now Catwoman confirm that she is one of the busiest actresses in Hollywood. She will next be seen in Sidney Lumet's remake of The Set-Up, and has also signed to play the title role in another remake, Foxy Brown.

How did you develop your sexy, slinky walk for the role of Catwoman?

I think part of it came from studying cat movements. The costume was designed to show a little bit more of the body, not just to show skin but really to show the sinewy nature of a cat, and show the muscles that would show the movements a little bit better. So that walk was derived from studying hours of tapes of cats and trying to move in the way that a cat would actually move.

Do you have any plans to bring any more comic book characters to the screen in the future?

I didn't really grow up reading comic books, but as I have come into my adult life I have become more aware of them. I have to say I doubt I will do another comic book film. After playing this role and Storm in X-Men I think my comic book hero days are probably over - unless I'm lucky enough to play Catwoman again. But other than that I think I've pretty much done it.

The climactic fight between you and Sharon Stone is pretty spectacular. How was it to film?

I think it took about nine days to shoot, and it was pretty intense. We worked a lot with our stunt doubles because we didn't want to injure each other. I'm really not trained to do that kind of thing. She and I both welcomed the idea of working with each other's doubles so that we felt free to do the best we could. We also realised that we were working with professionals so that freed us up to go further and try more, and risk doing a lot of the stunts ourselves because we knew we weren't going to hurt anyone.

Would those who know you say that you possessed feline grace, or are you a klutz in real life?

I think I'm a good mix of the two which is why this is the perfect choice for me as a character to play. I think there are times in my life when I can very much relate to who Patience Philips is, feeling that I don't quite fit in, feeling less than sure of myself. And there have been times when I felt as fierce as a tiger and held my ground when I stood up for what I believed in against adversity. So I'm a little bit of both.

When you were making the film were you conscious of other incarnations of the Catwoman character?

I had some images of all the Catwomen in my mind, but what I didn't want to do was to revisit their performances. Michelle Pfeiffer was very present in my mind because she was the last one I saw, but I really wanted to take my lead from the script we had before us, which was very different. It wasn't set in Gotham City, there was no Batman, there was no Joker, I just wanted to figure out who this version of Catwoman would be within this universe and bring my own self to it without copying or mimicking anyone else.
