Brazil introduces blockchain-based digital identity

Brazil launches national identity program powered by blockchain technology. According to the Brazilian government’s announcement, more than 214 million citizens will soon use blockchain-based digital identities.

Rio de Janeiro, Goiás, and Paraná will be the first states to use blockchain identities developed by Sepro. In a decree published in the country on September 25, it was stated that the entire country could issue identity documents through blockchain technology until November 6.

According to Serpro president Alexandre Amorim, blockchain’s decentralized and immutable nature has made it the ideal technology for the country’s identity project.

Blockchain technology offers Brazilian citizens a more secure digital experience by playing a critical role in protecting personal data and preventing fraud. The b-Cadastros blockchain platform used significantly increases the security and reliability of the National Identity Card project.

According to the government, the identity project is vital in targeting organized crime, enabling public sectors to work together, providing a simple way to access services and streamlining administrative records.

Brazil has been working to bring its 30 states together on identity for the past few years. In the announcement, it was stated that with the new move, more secure data exchange will be ensured.

Another important development in the country is the upcoming CBDC. The government rebranded the digital currency as Drex, releasing more information about the project in August.
