Panic and fear

Speaking to the Italian ANSA news agency, the island’s fire director Giuseppe Biffarella said the locals and tourists were experiencing great fear because of the volcano activity. Italian media reported that many tourists who feared the violence of the explosions jumped into the sea panic.

The volcano on the island of Stromboli, with a population of about 500 inhabitants in the north of Sicily, is known as one of the most active volcanoes in the world. The 924-meter-high volcano, which had previously sprayed lava on August 2, 2008, did not extinguish, often discharging low amounts of lava. For this reason, the “Mediterranean Lighthouse” is also called. Some famous Italians have summer villas on the island, which attracts tourists because of its volcano and beaches.
