La Prima Notte di Quiete (1972)

La Prima Notte di Quiete movie storyline. Daniele Dominici is the new substitute teacher at a classical high school in Rimini. During his first lesson he assigns the children two tracks of their choice for a theme to be carried out in class: one on a free topic, the second on a literary topic. Only one student, Vanina Abati, prefers the second theme, arousing the curiosity and interest of the teacher, who begins to court her, gives her Stendhal’s book Vanina Vanini and tries to enter her life.

Daniele begins to hang out with a group of provincial “calves”, with whom he spends empty nights with drugs, alcohol and gambling. The company includes Gerardo Pavani, a small local boss to whom Vanina is linked by a murky relationship, and the young doctor Giorgio Mosca, known as Spider, who behind a cynical and superficial appearance hides a sensitive soul and great culture.

Upon leaving school, Daniele invites Vanina to go with him to Monterchi: in illustrating the Madonna del Parto by Piero della Francesca to her, the teacher is transformed and animated with enthusiasm. Vanina also seems to break that patina of melancholy and indifference in which she is usually immersed. On the way back, after dark, they kiss passionately: the encounter is abruptly ended when Vanina sees her boyfriend’s car in the distance and leaves in a hurry.
