Divergent movie review. Outside, huge walls of wires, a ruined city inside. How come out of such a stalemate is forbidden by these walls? However, the city is alive, for example, you see a constantly running transportation network throughout the movie, and everyone does their part.
Social structure; The sages are divided into 5 different statuses: Erudite, Friends (Amity), Honests (Candor), Fearless (Dauntless), and Sacrifices (Abnegation). Each of these represents a function, sages research, friends do farming, honest judges, fearless advocates and sacrifices take on social responsibility roles. The symbols and discourses of each group are different; groups even act like maverick overlords on their own. There is no parent community to which these groups are affiliated. Perhaps this is the strongest criticism that can be brought to the movie fiction, despite the unexpected facts that will appear in the next series.
As with all dystopian films, the building here was built with pressure and there were “bad days” before the building. This structure was proposed to prevent conflicts to keep bad days away and to stay safe in the ruined world. However, we know that conflict is necessary for the democratic decision process. The separation of groups by sharp borders also destroys the common platform that will allow different views to meet on a common ground. We see the reflections of this throughout the movie.
In this order, where everyone should belong somewhere, people are tested to make sure their belonging. Although this test is done as “get to know yourself”, it also shows the severity of grouping. When Beatrice, the protagonist of our movie, also goes into this test, is warned by the person working there because it belongs to more than one group. We understand that this is a threat.
Looking at the test to determine the fraction, we understood that the altruists should not look in the mirror, Beatrice does not bother looking at her in the mirror, she even wants to see herself. For this reason, we understand that he cannot be altruistic. The logic here is based on the fact that one should think of someone else before him and not be concerned with his image / existence. Because we understand when we see many time beings, we reinforce the sense of ‘I’ with our image.
So Beatrice decides to leave her current group. When he belonged to another group, he was supposed to be a completely different person. It tells us in the best way that Beatrice changed her name to Tris, burned her old clothes and changed her hairstyle. In this new class, as in all other classes, there are things that it has to do. While doing these, as a group of people, they wear the same clothes, eat the same food, enter the toilet in the same place and take a bath in the same place. Like a military order, right? Identities do not matter here, belonging to a group and being able to adapt there is important.
A new beginning with the desire of man is always incredibly exciting, having a new identity that has long been resolved will make him happy to win new members, but the continuation of the process will not be as much fun as they think.
As he discovers the system, Tris notices other dangers, for example, she learns that her brother, who has joined the group of scholars, has been manipulated, her friend has become hostile to her, and beyond that, people who do not fit into the groups die. We understand that there are certain problems in the system. We see this in the wildest scene, where the fearless people are put to sleep, soldiers are used in the interests of a certain group, such as a pawn. As the tattooist line says, those who cannot belong to a group are those who cannot be controlled and are dangerous to society.
In other words, under the name Tris, there is a mediocre character for that society, which is not able to adapt to the social structure. Can you identify with people who have been forced to complete the university because this did not succeed in university exams? Imagine a mind that can not keep up with the education system at the university and thinks differently.
Throughout the movie, we see that Tris has different features, for example, he endangers himself to protect his friend, questions what is said, and sometimes objections. Therefore, he is not suitable for being a soldier, and his tattoo screams it, life under command is not for him.
An expression in the movie is remarkable; fear does not make Tris sleep, sobering. How does fear make people sleepy? We know that we live with many fears in the social structure; such as death, loneliness, punishment, abandonment, deceit. Even think about how interesting horror movies are for some of us. People love fear because it is dope. But fear does not have the same effect on Tris.
And finally, when I hear the word “There is an absolute beauty in your resistance”, which is said by looking into the eyes of Tirs who don’t sleep, the V for Vandetta vein swells. And Tris and Four put a club in what they call fraction. However, everything is just beginning. We owe this 2014 science fiction movie to the Divergent serial book by Veronika Roth, born in 1988, and then to Neil Burger, who directed the film.
