Hello-A Lyrics by Mouth & MacNeal

Hello-A Lyrics by Mouth & MacNeal

Hello-A is the third single from Mouth & MacNeal. It comes from their album “Hello and Thank You”. In terms of text, it is nothing short of nothing and became the summer hit of 1972. Single and album also appeared in the United States. The single reached the Billboard Hot 100; the album was given the title Mouth & MacNeal II. When Hello-a leads the European charts, How Do You Do rises to number 8 in the American list.

Mouth & MacNeal was a singing duo consisting of Willem Duyn (also known as Big Mouth) and Maggie MacNeal (real name: Sjoukje van ‘t Spijker, known after her marriage as Sjoukje Smit). They were brought together as a singing duo by Hans van Hemert. Mouth & MacNeal performed together in the period 1971 to 1974. They scored seven top 10 hits in the Netherlands, including two number one hits: How Do You Do and Hello-A.

The duo was also successful outside the Netherlands. It scored big hits across Europe and even in the United States the somewhat ambiguous How Do You Do (the characteristic nana-nana was at the time interpreted as an allusion to sex) achieved a top 10 rating and a sale of more than one million copies. This resulted in a golden record.

In March 1974 Mouth & MacNeal took part in the prestigious San Remo song festival. The number “Ah l’Amore” became eleventh. At the Eurovision Song Contest 1974 they gained a third place behind ABBA and Gigliola Cinquetti with I see a star. This number also became a big hit in Europe with a number 8 listing in England. Many tours followed with big names such as Mud, The Sweet and Middle of the Road.

After many silver, gold and platinum plates and all sorts of other international prizes, including an Edison and a Golden Lion, the duo split up at the end of 1974. Mouth continued with Little Eve (Ingrid Kup) and scored two more hits; MacNeal got the Dutch gossip press (and public opinion) because of the break and started a solo career. Since November 2008 Mouth & MacNeal performed again, but with Arie Ribbens as replacement for the original Mouth, Willem Duyn, who died in 2004.

Hello-A Lyrics (1972)

I understand that all men can’t be the same
But the way you treated me
When we met was more than strange

I could not care less
The only thing that counts is
The fact that for bad manners
I’ve got you in exchange

Hello-a, hello-a, can’t you see?
Hello-a, hello-a, what I feel
Hello-a, hello-a, come my way
Hello-a, hello-a, bless the day

Hooma, hooma, hooma
Hooma, hooma, hooma
Hooma, hooma, hooma-ay

Hooma, hooma, hooma
Hooma, hooma, hooma
Hooma, hooma, hooma-ay

But don’t you think
I would do this once again
I agree I trapped
But still I would say it’s not the way

But I just don’t need
To do this all again
Now I’ve got you, I’m your man
You won’t hear me say again

Hello-a, hello-a, can’t you see?
Hello-a, hello-a, what I feel
Hello-a, hello-a, come my way
Hello-a, hello-a, bless the day

Hooma, hooma, hooma
Hooma, hooma, hooma
Hooma, hooma, hooma-ay

Hooma, hooma, hooma
Hooma, hooma, hooma
Hooma, hooma, hooma-ay

Hello-a, hello-a, can’t you see?
Hello-a, hello-a, what I feel
Hello-a, hello-a, come my way
Hello-a, hello-a, bless the day

Hooma, hooma, hooma
Hooma, hooma, hooma
Hooma, hooma, hooma-ay

Hooma, hooma, hooma
Hooma, hooma, hooma
Hooma, hooma, hooma-ay

Hello-a, hello-a, can’t you see?
Hello-a, hello-a, what I feel
Hello-a, hello-a, come my way
Hello-a, hello-a, bless the day

Hooma, hooma, hooma
Hooma, hooma, hooma
Hooma, hooma, hooma-ay

Hooma, hooma, hooma
Hooma, hooma, hooma
Hooma, hooma, hooma-ay
