Don’t say, “It’s cold, nobody can get me out of the house.” There are films, people and cultures. There are some films, which ignite the desire to leave the home. We asked our expert jury, “Which film will make you have a suitcase without saying snow and winter”, and when we watched it, we found 10 films that would arouse the desire to travel to that city.
A political journey: Motorcycle Diaries – South America
The two middle-class Argentineans want to see the geography they belong to with their own eyes, with the influence of their blood and spirits. One studied chemistry and the other medicine. They say goodbye to their families, some money, the veteran 1936 Norton 500 motorcycle underneath them, headed for the horizon.
One of them is called Alberto Granado, and the other one is Ernesto Guevara de la Serna… The audience meets the human side of this historical figure as well as the landscape of the journey as the miles grow in the ‘Motorcycle Diaries’ where we meet with the 23-year-old version of Che. The production, starring Gael Garcia Bernal, Rodrigo De la Serna and Mia Maestro, is especially for those who are interested in ‘political journeys’
You will feel the lead: The Lord of the Rings – New Zealand
Who wouldn’t want to watch the movie Ef The Lord of the Rings and see what they watched during the journey! If you’re like me, you’re in the mood for it. I went in January last year.
I was impressed by the Hobbiton, the village where the Hobbits lived. This is normally the film set; they could not dismantle the vehicles and decided to use them. Now a major tourist center. You can enter the area by paying a fee of around 300 pounds. Great place, very stunning. It felt like in the movie. It is one of the most beautiful places in the world for me to really experience the film atmosphere.
You will get lost in the streets of the metropolis: Time for Love – Hong Kong
İpek Gökdel / Author of ‘Hakan Muhafız’
When you watch the film Zaman Time for Love doğu written and directed by Wong Kar-wai, the master of Far Eastern cinema, you think that it is not just a film, but a love poem written into the visual. As you watch the film, you get lost in the back streets hidden behind the Hong Kong metropolitan landscape, crossing the smoky streets of Bangkok.
This remarkable film is finally found in the Angkor Wat Temple, built in Cambodia in the 12th century. Constructed by the labor of hundreds of thousands of workers, you can walk through the forests to see the largest temple in the world, and never touch the unfinished walls. In the last scene of the film, you will want to touch the sanctity of love and go to Far Eastern countries such as Thailand and Cambodia, which is currently living in spring.
Take a coffee break in that cafe: Amelie – Paris
The film, starring Audrey Tautou, made me discover the delightful streets of the Montmartre district of my favorite Paris. Sitting at Café des Deux Moulins, the café where Amelie works, where many scenes of the film take place, drinking coffee at the table she serves her lover, makes you feel as if you are in the film.
Leaving the café and walking down the narrow cobblestone streets towards Amelie’s house provides a great tour of Montmartre. Pont des Arts, one of the most beautiful bridges in Paris, is another must-see place.
A romantic journey: Before Sunrise – Vienna
It makes me love and walk around Vienna. The film, starring Ethan Hawke (Jesse) and Julie Delpy (Celine), first gives people a desire to go on a train journey. From the Westbahnhof Train Station to the Zollamtssteg Bridge, from Vienna’s famous square Maria-Theresien-Platz to the Kunsthistorisches Museum …
Jesse first kisses Celine in the historic turntable in Vienna’s famous amusement park Prater; the couple then go to Kleines Cafe, my favorite little Vienna café. There they meet a fortune teller. Maria Gestade Church, Cafe Sperl, Albertina Museum, opera house Wiener Staatsoper, canal and streets… Alt & Neu is a must-see record player in Vienna, where a beautiful scene takes place.
I went for 6 days and stayed 3 months: Talented Mr. Ripley – Positano
In 2000, when I was still a student, Rip Talented Mr. Ripley ’made me dream of going to the Gulf of Naples, Ischia Island, Palermo and Positano for 10 years. When I said goodbye to the advertising industry in 2011, I had enough money to buy a Napoli ticket in my pocket and stay at Maria Pansiyon in Positano for six days.
Without thinking, I bought my ticket and found myself at Positano on the first ferry, first through Naples and then through Sorrento. This town, built on cliffs, where I went for six days, worked for me for three months. Thank you, Mr. Ripley, and thank you, Anthony Minghella!
