A drama about a woman who assists her friend to arrange an illegal abortion in 1980's Romania.
4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days is Cristian Mungiu's staggering story of friendship and sacrifice during the last days of Romanian communism. This stunning film, which won the 2007 Cannes Palme d'Or and the Fipresci Prize for Film of the Year, was also featured at the Telluride, Toronto and New York film festivals and will screen at AFI Fest in Los Angeles in November. 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days is the Romanian Oscar selection and will open in late January 2008.
In 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, college roommates Otilia (Anamaria Marinca) and Gabita (Laura Vasiliu) are busy preparing for a night away. But rather than planning for a holiday, they are making arrangements for Gabita's illegal abortion and unwittingly find themselves burrowing deep down a rabbit hole of stark realities and ugly truths. Transpiring over the course of a single day, Mungiu's film is an immersive masterwork of naturalism, by turns poignant, shocking and darkly comedic. The latest in a recent Romanian renaissance (The Death of Mr. Lazarescu, 12:08 East of Bucharest), it features virtuosic camerawork by Oleg Mutu (Lazarescu) and a riveting performance by Anamaria Marinca.
