Eva Mendes: Making fun of the movies
Featured interview by Daniel Robert Epstein
Eva Mendes is definitely really hot. In a room full of old people journalists, I look the youngest, so I think me and her made a lot of eye contact. She reminded me of Cameron Diaz's cool Mary character in the movie There's Something about Mary.
I guess that's not that big of coincidence, since the creators of Mary cast her in their new film, Stuck on You. Mendes plays the traditional Hollywood bubbly blond-type role, Conjoined twins played by Greg Kinnear and Matt Damon come out to Hollywood so that one of them can make it big in movies. Mendes has had quite the year with starring roles in Out of Time, Once Upon a Time in Mexico and 2 Fast 2 Furious.
Your role in Stuck on You could have been the dumb blond role.
Yes, except it's played by a little Cuban girl, which is really nice. I am obsessed with the Farrelly Brothers. I love Dumb & Dumber and Kingpin. So when I got the opportunity to audition, I was so excited. I wanted to change their minds, because the role was written very Caucasian.
How did you do that?
I needed to meet them. It was the first time I felt that passion, because I get their humor. So I studied their movies like crazy. They've been telling people they knew it was for me as soon as I walked in, but they still made me come back three more times. They have such great lines in their movies.
Like what?
In Dumb & Dumber, "Our pets' heads are falling off!" That's one of my favorites.
Did they try to offend you on set? I heard Bobby likes to pull down his pants.
Yes, Bobby likes to show his penis, and everyone warned me about that. I got offended because he didn't show me his penis. There is a sense of, I want to belong to the club, and I guess he just respected me, which really offends me.
What superpower would you want to have?
To fly. I would fly from building to building flapping my wings.
Would you fight crime?
Naw, that's a lot of work.
What was it like watching Matt and Greg work while stuck together?
It was amazing. The first scene I had with them, they had everything down. They just get along, and have great chemistry. What's funny is that, when I came into the picture, everything just clicked, and it was just there. We started offending each other within five minutes. The sarcasm just kicked in.
How would you make fun of them?
Mostly we make fun of the movies that haven't succeeded. It's all out of love. They make fun of themselves, as well.
Did you ever touch that thing that kept them together?
Of course I did. I poked it quite a few times.
Was it gross?
Not gross, but it's quite hard. I thought it would be like play dough.
