I´m very involved with causes that are close to my heart
You said in a recent interview that you don´t want to be a superstar nor another pretty face. What else is left?
I´d like to be an actress and as long as I´m recognised for my acting capabilities, I´ll be happy. However, on the silver screen, I would like the audience to see me not as Miss Asia Pacific, but as Dia Mirza.
What happened to all the charity causes you spoke about as a beauty queen. What have you done for Gujarat?
I´m very involved with causes that are close to my heart. For instance, I´m working on the integration of special kids with regular school children and am also helping the AP government in spreading social awareness. As for Gujarat, I don´t want to do what everyone´s doing. I know that once the news, headlines and hype dies down, people will stop contributing. That´s when I´ll do my bit.
Why is it that beauty queens eventually end up on the silver screen?
If you´re even a little inclined towards movies and you begin to get offers on a golden platter, which would be ridiculous to refuse. How successful you are eventually depends on your individual capacity as an actor.
What do you have to say about talk that you´ve hiked your price greatly after winning the Miss Asia Pacific pageant?
Yes, I have increased my fee. But isn´t it normal that when a secretary is promoted to a boss, he/she gets a hike in salary? You work hard to get better and that´s the least you expect. Anyway, 25 per cent of my earnings go to charity.
You weren´t even screen-tested for your part in Anupam Kher´s Om Jai Jagdish. Do you think you deserve the role?
The director watched me during television interviews, in the Sony capsule and on Star News and felt I´d be able to do a good job. As for whether I think I deserve it or not, I´m going to give it my best shot and it only when I feel I´ve done justice to the part, that I´ll be able to answer that.
