"A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints" is a coming-of-age drama about a boy growing up in Astoria, N.Y., during the 1980s. As his friends end up dead, on drugs or in prison, he comes to believe he has been saved from their fate by various so-called saints.
A modern day Mean Streets, A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints is a story of a pivotal summer on the hot, sweaty, violent streets of Astoria Queens.
A summer that changed not only Dito Montiel, but the lives of everyone around him. Torn between his ill father, his domineering friend and protector Antonio, the neighborhood war and the lustful temptations of youth, Dito struggles against his desire to escape, running away from everything he knows. He finds redemption 15 years later when he returns to Queens and faces the "Saints" that have influenced his life.
After being expelled from high school for fighting with the security guards, Astoria, Queens, native Dito Montiel "wrote a bunch of madness in pen" that was published by Avalon books. He joined a hardcore band and toured in a van for eternity, filming short ideas on any camera he could borrow.
During a book reading in California, Robert Downey Jr, approached Montiel about making a movie. Montiel learned that INT means interior and EXT means exterior, and wrote a script that was eventually developed at the Sundance Screenwriters and Filmmakers Labs. A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints is his first film.
