Catherine O'Hara has more recently become best known for her hilarious performances in the Christopher Guest comedy hits “A Mighty Wind,” for which she also composed some of the songs, and “Best in Show.” She won an American Comedy Award for Funniest Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for her work in the latter. She had earlier worked with Guest in his critically acclaimed comedy “Waiting for Guffman.” O'Hara next co-stars with Jim Carrey and Meryl Streep in the fantasy adventure “Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events,” due out in December.
O'Hara first began making audiences laugh as a writer and performer on the groundbreaking syndicated comedy series hit “SCTV.” She won an Emmy Award and earned four additional Emmy nominations for her writing on the show. Following her “SCTV” stint, O'Hara directed the Second City comedy troupe on stage in Canada.
One of O'Hara's earliest film roles was the outlandishly artistic mother in Tim Burton's “Beetlejuice.” She also played the forgetful mother who leaves her son behind in the comedy smash “Home Alone,” as well as in the hit sequel “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.” Her other film credits include “After Hours,” “Heartburn,” “Dick Tracy,” “Betsy's Wedding,” “Little Vegas,” “There Goes the Neighborhood,” “The Paper,” “Wyatt Earp,” “A Simple Twist of Fate,” “Tall Tale,” “Home Fries” and “Orange County.” In addition, she also provided the voices of Sally and Shock in the animated fantasy film “Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas.”
O'Hara made her television directorial debut with an episode of “Dream On,” and later wrote, co-directed and co-starred in “P.M.S.,” a short film for “Late Night with David Letterman.” She also directed and starred in an episode of “The Outer Limits.”
