“Habbaytak Bissayf” is a Lebanese Arabic language song (حبيتك بالصيف, “I Loved You in the Summer”) performed by Lebanese singer Fairouz. The lyrics and music were written by the Rahbani Brothers. Fairouz first performed this song in 1970 – 1971 in the play Ya’ish Ya’ish and her 1971 US tour.
The title of the song means “I Loved You in the Summer”. This song tells the story of a girl waiting for her love, fleeting like the summer, but who never comes. Jean François Michael adapted the music in his French song “Coupable” (French: “Guilty”).
So much emotion and power is in the Arabic music. The western music can be very good sometimes but there can be no place to compare between the two. Arabic music is so much more than just simple music. its like something comes out of the soul itself and plays right to other souls. Thank god for bringing us such beautiful music.
Can you ever get enough of Fairouz? Her songs are simply amazing and are beyond the time in which they were written and produced. Many of her songs capture many themes that range from love stories to patriotic songs. Given that I always stress how important music is for learning a new language and for getting immersed in that particular culture, I am sharing another musical masterpiece by the Ambassador to the Stars. This love ballad is titled ‘Habeytak bil Saif’ which translates to ‘I Loved you in Summer.’ I have added the YouTube video of the song. I have also added the lyrics in Arabic and I have translated them to English so that you can follow with the song.
I Loved You in the Zummer Lyrics (1970)
On the cold days, on the rainy days,
The roads are flooded and deep,
A girl comes, from her old house,
And he tells her wait for me, she waits on the roadside,
And he goes and forgets about her, she wilts in the rain.
I loved you in the summer, I loved you in the winter,
I waited for you in the summer, I waited for you in the winter,
Your eyes are in the summer and my eyes are in the winter,
We did not meet my love, summers and winters passed.
An unfamiliar woman passed by, she gave me a letter,
My love had written it, with tears of sorrow,
She opened the letter, she found lost words,
And time passed by, the years made us strangers,
The words in the letter were erased by the rain.
I loved you in summer, I loved you in winter,
I waited for you in the summer, I waited for you in the winter,
Your eyes are in the summer and my eyes are in the winter,
We did not meet my love, summers and winters passed.
