Mysterious journey in Derinkuyu underground city

Derinkuyu, an underground city built to protect itself from enemy attacks and slave traders, has an astonishing architecture…

Derinkuyu underground city is waiting for visitors in Cappadocia region, Turkey. It is one of only about 200 underground cities in this region; but it is known as the deepest and largest. Derinkuyu is an 11-storey historical city up to 85 meters in size and can accommodate between 3000-50.000 people.

Derinkuyu underground city was opened to visitors in 1965. Only 10% of the underground city can be visited by tourists. Archaeologists, on the other hand, have access to a wider range of historical research.

Derinkuyu, which was first excavated during the Hittite period, was expanded during the centuries that followed and merged with other underground cities. This underground city, which contained several kilometers of tunnels, was built to hide from the invading armies in search of slaves.

In an underground city built with delicacy that astonishes those who see it, everything like normal life has been done. family rooms, common areas, churches, olive oil warehouses, chimneys providing fresh air, wells with clean water, a school with even rows and a burial room where the dead can be kept until sufficient security is provided.

The city has 600 gates that open to the outside. Most of these gates are built in hidden areas. Of course, it may seem strange to have so many entrances to a city built for hiding. However, every entrance is made up of moving rocks that can be closed if the city is under attack. These stone doors can only be opened from the inside.
