Chinese press conference with Uighur regional dancing

A press conference was held on ‘training camps in the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region of China. Chinese officials have announced that a large number of people in these camps, allegedly forced by the Uyghur Turks, have been released. The Uighur folk dance performance before the meeting created an interesting press conference environment.

It was announced that the Uighur Turks were held forcibly and that most of the people in the camps called ‘training camp’ by the Beijing administration were released. China’s government, ‘concentration camp’ regarding the camp were described as come under criticism by human rights organizations and many countries, including Turkey. The press conference in which the Uighurs were released was an interesting scene. Beijing has been criticized for human rights and freedoms because of the camps, and organized a show where the traditional dance of the Uighurs was held before the press conference.

Shohrat Zakir, President of the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region, appeared before the press with his deputy Alken Tuniaz. The Chinese authorities did not share any numerical data on the issue, but said that the people leaving the camps had ‘completed their training’ and found a job. Alken Tuniaz announced that many people who have received training as instructors in the camps have returned to their homes and families. Experts and human rights organizations claimed that more than 1 million Uighurs and other Muslim minorities living in Xinjiang were held in these camps. It is claimed that these people are exposed to Beijing’s assimilation policies.

China declared that the camps, which had been rejected for a long time, were ‘vocational training camps, and that they were established to combat radical religiousism and increase employment. Zakir and Tuniaz said that about 90 percent of those who returned from the camp found what they wanted when they came back and found suitable jobs for them, and said that the camps were given lessons such as ‘Chinese Law, Mandarin and the true meaning of religion’.
