Indonesia's Komodo Island to be closed in 2020

It is announced that Komodo Island in East Nusa Tenggera province, which is one of the favorite centers of tourism in Indonesia, will be temporarily closed for tourism and residence from 2020 onwards.

Eastern Nusa Tenggara Tourism Agency said in a statement, to improve the ecological balance of the island for a while from the decision to close the next year said.

Stating that President Joko Widodo supports this idea during his visit to the island, officials stressed that the closure of the island for a while will also help protect the Komodo dragon species. 100 billion Indonesian rupees will be spent for the protection of the island.

Residents of Komodo Island protested against the plan to evacuate the island. “We have been supporting efforts to protect the island for years. But the closure of the island will deprive us of our livelihoods.” said an islander named Ihsan Abdul Emir speaking to Indonesian media.

Komodo Island is one of Indonesia’s 12 largest marine tourism centers. This island is known well worldwide for hosting hundreds of thousands of foreign tourists every year. However, the presence of so many tourists leads to difficult environmental problems.
