Cruise ships protest in Venice, holiday paradise of Europe

Protests against these giant ruise ships are climbing after an accident involving a cruise ship in Venice in early June. The Majorans launched a campaign to limit the number of tourists arriving by ship.

The anti-cruise campaign launched on the website “You Move Europe” calls for authorities to limit the number of tourists visiting the capital city of Palma de Mallorca to a maximum of 4,000 per day. Officials criticized the campaign initiative and stressed the positive effects of cruise tourism on the local economy.

According to DW Turkish, Jaume Garau, director of the environmental protection platform Palma XXI, said that three to four giant cruise ships are currently mooring to the island port and bringing about 15,000 passengers to the capital. According to official statistics, the number of tourists visiting Palma de Mallorca in one year increased from 545 thousand to 1 million 190 thousand in 2009-2018. According to a study conducted by the European Transport and Environmental Organization, Palma de Mallorca is the second most affected by the air pollution problem caused by cruise ships in Europe from Barcelona to Spain.

Last Saturday in Barcelona, thousands of people protested the accident in Venice and giant passenger ships. Barcelona demonstrators demanded that these ships not docked in the city port.
