Fingerprint regulation on ID cards in EU

The European Union (EU) has approved a series of regulations which require fingerprints on the cards to increase security on their ID cards.

According to a written statement from the Council of the EU, the security of identity cards, theft and counterfeiting to increase the fight against the new regulation was approved by the minimum security measures that should be applied to all member countries ID cards were determined.

Accordingly, all ID cards will be of the same size and will be read by the machines. Photographs and fingerprints will also be required on ID cards.

Identity cards may be valid for at least 5, maximum 10 years. Member states will be able to issue longer-term ID cards for citizens over 70 years of age.

The new regulation will take effect within 2 years.
