Metaverse will arrive sooner or later

Metaverse will arrive. Angie Gifford, Meta (Facebook) company’s Vice President for Europe, Africa and the Middle East, stated that the metaverse will come sooner or later and that Meta’s metaverse project will be implemented in 8-10 years.

IFA 2023, which is shown as Europe’s largest consumer electronics fair and is held every year in Berlin, the capital of Germany, continues with events where important issues of technology are discussed as well as areas where technological devices are exhibited.

Speaking at the fair at the session titled “Virtual Boundaries: What are the effects of the Metaverse for consumers, artists and companies?”, Angie Gifford, Meta company’s Vice President for Europe, Africa and the Middle East, made statements about the future of the Metaverse project.

Underlining that the metaverse is not a single technology, Gifford said that the project is the new state of the internet. Gifford, who briefly defines the metaverse as the internet turning from 2-dimensional to 3-dimensional, explained that the internet will thus become more inclusive.

We will be patient for 8-10 years

Answering questions in the program about whether the metaverse is an exaggerated project, Gifford said, “Metaverse will arrive sooner or later. Metaverse was talked about a lot 2 years ago. Now it is not talked about that much. As someone who has been working in the technology sector for a long time, I can say that it takes some time for technological revolutions to come to life.

I also worked at Microsoft. In the 90s, Bill Gates had a beautiful vision: Gates said there would be a computer on every desk. Everyone thought it was crazy at the time. But right now, everyone here has at least 1, maybe 2 phones in their pocket. So technology takes time and we will see the metaverse in the next 8-10 years.”

Metaverse has lost its place on the agenda

Metaverse became one of the most talked about topics on the world agenda when Meta Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mark Zuckerberg changed the name of his company, formerly Facebook, to Meta.

As the concept became popular in the world, virtual lands began to be sold on metaverse platforms and many people invested in these lands. However, over time, the metaverse lost its popularity in the world.

180,000 people are expected to visit

IFA 2023, where sustainability comes to the fore, will host its visitors in Berlin, Germany, until September 5. More than 180,000 people are expected to visit the fair, where more than 2 thousand companies from 48 countries will exhibit their new technology products. Highlights of this year’s fair include the Sustainability Village, House of Robots, Gaming and Esports Arena and IFA Next, which hosts many initiatives.

At the Leaders Summit at the fair, the production of chips and artificial intelligence, which are of great importance in almost every field of technology, from wearable electronics for health to in-vehicle electronic systems, will be discussed. The summit is expected to shed light on the transformative potential of technology, particularly how it can spur wider acceptance of energy transition and the circular economy.
