Metaverse: So why now?. In order for major transformations in digital to occur, content producers, consumers and the technologies required to ensure the transformation must reach a certain level. One of the most important requirements for Metaverse and Virtual Reality is fast internet. It is predicted that by 2025, half of the world’s population will have access to 5G internet.
However, 3D Rendering times are getting shorter and the production of 3D assets is becoming easier. Advances in 3D modeling are crucial to the production of realistic-looking content in the Metaverse. On the other hand, the production and ownership of digital assets is being democratized. According to DappRadar data, the sales of NFTs reached a value of $ 25 billion in 2021. These assets regarding our visual identity and digital presence can be moved to different digital universes and purchased in the Metaverse. At the same time, we have become increasingly accustomed to AR and VR technologies, which are the first steps of the Metaverse, and have begun to use them with pleasure.
According to the “Emerging Trends” research conducted by Facebook IQ in September 2020, 82 percent of people aged 18-64 say that they have used Augmented Reality (AR) technology in the last year. While 86 percent of the participants in the same research stated that they are open to AR experiences, 74 percent say that AR can bridge the gap between online and offline and that it is a fun way to interact with brands. While all this is happening, access to virtual reality experiences is increasing with products such as Oculus Quest.
Artificial intelligence technology, which is also one of the building blocks of the Metaverse, is at its peak today. In January this year, we announced that we had developed the next generation Artificial Intelligence Supercluster (RSC). RSC, one of the world’s fastest AI supercomputers, will help us build the Metaverse by developing new and better AI models, processing hundreds of languages, and producing new Augmented Reality tools.
These developments and data show us that we are preparing for the transition to the Metaverse. But of course, this is a path we will build together and a journey we embark on together. Since we believe in the importance of working with content producers, non-governmental organizations, universities and policy makers in this process and developing Metaverse together, we defined this as a journey and announced the Metaverse vision before the launch of Metaverse.
In order for Metaverse to be safe, inclusive, empowering and democratic for everyone, we ensure that different universities specialized in technology from around the world carry out independent research, we run XR Programs, and we support content producers, software developers and engineers from these groups to ensure greater representation of under-represented groups. We made an initial investment of $50 million so that we can create the future responsibly. Now we are building the steps on this journey together.
