Metaverse, The sexual assault incident at Horizon Worlds, the virtual reality platform of Meta company, was announced by the corporate responsibility group SumOfUs.
It was stated that the incident experienced by the researcher in the group was an indication that Meta needed a better study plan to avoid the dangers in the Metaverse.
Speaking to the BBC, the company stated that Horizon Worlds has security tools so that users can have a positive experience. Reminding that he did not see the full report of SumOfUs, Meta spokesperson stated that they are trying to ensure that everyone at Horizon Worlds has access to security procedures.
Horizon Worlds is currently only available to users in the US and Canada. It has simplified, cartoon-like looks with the avatar on the platform. Vicky Wyatt, campaign director of the SumOfUs group, stated that the attacks can be traumatic even though they are in the virtual world and said, “Although it is virtual, it has a real impact on users.”
Wyatt said the investigator who was attacked thought he was “shocked on the one hand, okay, that’s not my real body, it’s an avatar.” On the other hand, he said that he acted with the thought of ‘this is a really very important research, I must capture this moment’.
The BBC quoted some of the footage it saw: “As the researcher took the avatar himself, it is not in view. However, there are two male avatars in the room. One stands very close to the female avatar while the other watches. The two men sip their drinks while making disturbing sexual comments.”
