Film Review for Un Homme qui me Plaît

“Un homme qui me plait” is a wonderful film about two people who are not free, but who still fall in love with each other despite everything. For them it is a vacation, they travel together around the United States until the day when reality and their responsibilities will remind them. A very moving and heartbreaking end. A classic of French cinema in the same way as “A bout de souffle”.

It is a meeting that comes by chance, without thinking about the couple. It’s a film that unfolds like a banality. We share existence and love arises. The spectator witness walks slowly but surprised towards passion.

I expected to see a tender and sensitive film, in the tradition of “The old maid”… But, in the end, I found the time long, after a few minutes, I got lost in the plot… However, Annie Girardot and Jean-Paul Belmondo are excellent as usual there… But, personally, I find that Claude Lelouch has made films much more funny and moving. Maybe also the day I saw this one, I was not on my plate.

Two hours of total change of scenery… I was immediately caught by this film (by the music, already. Then, the presence of these two sublime actors – Belmondo (who has never been so beautiful and seductive) and Girardot (decidedly a great lady of the cinema). Then, the birth of a relationship… of an affair… of an idyll… between consenting adults despite their respective marital status… Unforgettable moments through the United States … moments that we would all dream of living at least once in our life. And then in the end, a cruel message but yet so true: in Love, men do not have the courage of women …

I am really divided, it starts blah blah but little by little, we let ourselves be carried away by the magic of Lelouch and the sublime music of Francis Lai in this road trip through Arizona with this couple that everything opposes and in whom we did not believe not. The last scene is crazy.
