M.U.S.A. (Museo Subacuático de Arte) is one of the largest and most ambitious underwater art attractions in the world. Located near the island of Isla Mujeres and the coast of Punta Nizuc in Cancún, the museum features over 500 permanent life-size sculptures created by Jason deCaires Taylor. Let’s take a tour of this interesting museum.
The exhibition includes 450 original human figures. People in the Mexican Underwater Sculpture Museum, a city of petrified people, bear the signature of British photographer and sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor. The artifacts collected in two galleries, Salon Manchones and Salon Nizuc, can be visited by divers.
Jason deCaires Taylor puts each statue under the sea, placing it one by one. Every work in the museum is meticulously and with extraordinary care. The sculptures made specially for the museum are unique.
The sculpture museum, which is not only a work of art, but is made of materials compatible with nature and acts as a natural reef for sea creatures, is spread over an area of 420 square meters. Works with a total weight exceeding 200 tonnes cover a barren sea area. It is possible to see corals and sea creatures among the sculptures made of cement which is neutralized with PH values and made under water. The Mexican Underwater Sculpture Museum, which offers a diving adventure full of surprises, promises to offer you new landscapes with a living space every time you visit.
1 Million tourists every year
The park and museum, which is frequented by nearly 1 million tourists every year, also contribute to the development of the region. The museum, which has been deliberately designed to reduce the high demand for natural reefs and the expected destruction, is also receiving great support from non-governmental organizations. The area, which is of interest to professional and amateur diver of all ages, can be visited by tours. The Mexican Underwater Sculpture Museum, which includes a shallow gallery for snorkelling, invites art enthusiasts to the sport. The museum, which creates suitable areas for feeding, hiding and living marine creatures, also contributes to the health of people with diving.
During the dive, art lovers can quickly burn calories while witnessing a unique visual feast. Sculptures specially designed for the reproduction of corals also contribute to the reshaping of nature. Dozens of crabs, hundreds of fish and many marine dives, who have taken the statues home, greet visitors. Today, the statues that are covered with moss continue to be shaped by nature at any moment unlike the other statues on the earth.
