7 million people visit the Eiffel Tower annually. Since its construction, 250 million people have visited it. Think of the money the French earned from this tower.
The Eiffel Tower was built in 2 years and 2 months; 3,000 workers worked continuously and although it was built 135 years ago, no worker lost their life. In our country, in this age of technology, 2-3 workers die every day in work accidents, even in simple jobs. In Turkey alone, 1,843 workers died in work accidents in 2022 and 1,929 workers in 2023. Now calculate how many people have died over the years.
When the Eiffel Tower was first built, it received great reactions from many people, especially the artists of that period. They protested the tower, which was described as a pile of metal, saying that its architecture was a disgrace, that it would damage the visual reputation of Paris and ruin the structure of the city, and they started campaigns to prevent it from being built. French administrators tried to calm the reactions by saying that it would be demolished after the fair was over.
English poet and artist William Morris begins to spend most of his time in Eiffel. Thereupon, “The tower attracts you more than anyone else.” they tease. William Morris said, “I live here because it is the only place in all of Paris where I have not seen this ugly pile of iron.” he says.
Later, they silenced the reactions for a while by stating that the tower was built for 20 years and would definitely be demolished afterwards. By 1909, it was seen that the tower, which had to be dismantled, was at a very suitable height for communication. It did not collapse in the new century because it enabled trans-Atlantic communication. In terms of radio broadcasting, it was used as a signal interrupter and jammer in World War I because it could spread radio waves over very long distances. The Tower is still used as a radio transmitter.
The Eiffel Tower cost 7,739,401 francs. After the opening, 1.9 million tourists visited it in the first 5 months and three quarters of the expenses were covered, making a profit before the end of the year. Now Parisians call the Eiffel Tower the “Iron Lady”.
After escaping the crowds of the Eiffel Tower, we took a boat tour on the Seine River. The Seine River passes through the middle of Paris and is the second longest river in France after the Loire. The river is also used in transportation and provides the opportunity to see the most important historical places of Paris.
There are 37 historical bridges decorated with sculptures over the river, world-famous and well-known works such as the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame Cathedral, Louvre Museum, as well as many beautiful cafes, restaurants and historical houses on the river banks. The edges of the river are protected with concrete barriers as a precaution against any floods and water rises. During our two-hour trip by big boat, we saw most of the historical riches of Paris on both sides of the river and took lots of photos.
In 1991, Paris and the Sully and Lena Bridges on the Seine River, along with its piers and the banks of the Seine River, were included in the World Cultural Heritage list.
