The Devil All the Time is a different movie for me, unlike anything I’ve seen before. We watched it with my daughter and we both found it interesting and liked it. It is adapted from the gothic novel of the same name written by Donald Ray Pollock. It means “Always Satan” in Turkish, but I don’t know if anyone would translate it like this. The film takes place in a rural area around West Virginia – Southern Ohio. The events that started after World War II extend to the 1960s.
The film, which has a very large cast, tells the story of people whose experiences are somehow related to each other, and what happens to almost every character is associated with their religious beliefs. People can sometimes do strange, bad, even cruel things under the influence of their beliefs; It might be more accurate to say that it refers to the fact that clergy are not always very honorable and magnificent people, and that they can distort religious rules for the sake of their personal goals. Actually, I did not find this explanation sufficient. I’m sure if you watch the movie you’ll understand what I mean.
me talk a little about the strange and interesting characters of The Devil All the Time, which have dark, troublesome, violent and traumatic stories related to each other:
– A war veteran who prayed constantly with his son at the altar he prepared for his wife to be cured of cancer, and then did something very startling for his wife to be healed; Willard.
– A strange, degenerate couple, Carl and Sandy; They often pick up hitchhikers, but it’s better not to get in their car.
– A preacher who, along with his disabled assistant, gives show-like sermons in churches that include a jar of spiders, then does something terrible based on a promise he believes came from God.
– Willard’s son Arvin, who starts living with his grandmother after the death of his father and mother and grows up with Lenora, the preacher’s daughter who puts on a show with spiders (The stories basically revolve around him. But this starts after he appears as a teenager around the 45th minute.)
– An ambitious, corrupt and dark-character sheriff who is Sandy’s older brother.
– A clergyman who looks crazy no matter how you look at him; Preston.
There are other characters in the movie; These are the ones that are more prominent. They move around a certain area, they all affect each other’s lives in some way. The movie has a slow, gloomy flow, but it never bored us, always thinking about what will happen now or soon, what will happen to this or that; We wondered how such a movie would end.
There are lots of characters and lots of stories; These begin to become more interconnected and coherent in the last 40 to 45 minutes. Tom Holland as Arvin and Robert Pattinson as Preston are particularly impressive.
