Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) will have such a huge impact on the global job market that 40% of workers will have to reskill in the next three years, according to a study by IBM. Within the scope of this research, 87% of the managers surveyed stated that they expect technologies such as ChatGPT to strengthen existing roles rather than replace them, and emphasized that artificial intelligence will not replace humans, but people who use artificial intelligence will replace people who do not use artificial intelligence.

Examining headline results from two surveys of 21,000 employees from 21 countries and 3,000 managers from 28 countries, IBM concluded that 4 in 10 people in the workforce, or approximately 1.4 billion workers, will need to reskill as a result of companies’ productive implementation of artificial intelligence and automation.
These new skills will impact workers at all levels, but those in entry-level jobs will be hardest hit. 72% of executive respondents said entry-level positions are already seeing the effects of generative AI, and this will increase further over the next few years. This figure stands at just 22% for executive or senior management roles.
IBM research also found that those who successfully reskilled to adapt to new technologies were not only more likely to keep their jobs, but also became better at their jobs.
Another interesting finding is the decreasing importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) skills. While STEM skills were seen as the most important requirement in the workforce in 2016, this requirement decreased to the minimum in 2023. While time management and priority setting skills stand out as the most important critical skills, these two skills are followed by the ability to work in a team environment and communicate effectively.
