Exploring Odessa, Ukraine’s favorite seaside city

Those who have visited before know that Odessa has an irresistible charm, especially in summer. There are countless reasons to take a summer vacation in Odessa, one of the most popular cities on the Black Sea coast of Ukraine. In this article, we would like to give information that will make your life easier while you are on vacation in Odessa, rather than giving information about “where to visit in Odessa”.

After picking up your suitcases from Odessa airport, we recommend that you visit the telecom kiosks next to the rent a car desks before leaving the airport. You can buy lines with 20 GB internet from these kiosks, as the telephone and especially the internet are very necessary abroad. We recommend using Uber instead of taxi for two reasons. Taxi drivers don’t really speak English and it’s very difficult to get along, especially when giving directions, Secondly, Uber can get you there for less than half of Odessa taxis.

As a hotel, you can stay on Derybasivska Street or in the streets parallel to it. This is the busiest street of Odessa and is within walking distance to everywhere except Acadia. You can easily access restaurants, markets, and eat ice cream while listening to street performers and musicians in the evenings.

We can say that a period of four days will be enough for you to have a holiday in Odessa. You can visit all the touristic places to visit in Odessa in one day, watch at least one performance at the Odessa Opera House in one day, and have fun on the beaches in Acadia for two days. I especially dedicate two days to Acadia, because whomever we recommend Odessa to, they can just have fun in Acadia and forget all other programs. Especially Ibiza Beach is a legendary place with both daytime pool parties and nightlife…

We said that you should definitely watch a show at the Odessa Opera House, but there is a point to be noted: There is a ‘dress-code’ requirement when entering the Opera House. Unfortunately, they do not buy shorts and sandals.

So where can you visit in Odessa? You can start your tour with Derybasivska Street. There are great places to eat, especially on Derybasivska Street. I especially recommend Kompot for breakfast. With its giant wooden peg and its decoration adorned with strawberries all over, Kompot is an impossible place to go unnoticed from the outside. Here you can find pancakes, omelettes and toast.

There is also a supermarket on the bottom floor of Europa Shopping Center on this street, you can buy everything at a much more affordable price than other 24-hour markets. If you go from Derybasivska Street towards the Opera House and turn right instead of turning to the Opera House, you will see Buffalo 99. Here you can eat huge hamburgers with your money’s worth. At the same time, if you are interested in football and basketball, you can drink beer and watch the match in the bar.

One of the other places we can recommend for dinner is Jardin after the City Garden tour. We can recommend you to order seafood in one of the camellias here, especially at sunset. The portions are also quite large, but it is a bit expensive compared to the places I recommend and will recommend, so it is useful to take a look at the menu before ordering. There are always mini bazaars and street concerts in the City Garden. These street concerts have concepts, for example they play Latin music and only old people come out and dance the way they want. Of course, we get mixed up with each other…

If you say “I’m not interested in these, you let me know about the parties”, Ibiza Beach in Acadia is for you! You can get here by Uber. Uber will drop you off at the beginning of Acadia, from here you have to walk for about 10 minutes. It is free to enter Ibiza Beach, you can rent a sun lounger or a lodge here. When wa went with our family, we rented a 6-person lodge for them to be comfortable.

We would not recommend you to go into the sea, but the pool reserved for adults is right in front of the DJ booth and bar, and uninterrupted music and entertainment await you here. When we say the pool reserved for adults, there are 3 pools in Ibiza and one of them is reserved for adults only… Not even children are allowed to pass in front of them, and there are security guards constantly waiting for them.

In the evening, Ibiza turns into a nightclub and you continue your entertainment with DJ performances and concerts. Most of those who go to Odessa start their holidays in Ibiza and end in Ibiza. If you say “I won’t stay until the evening, I’ll leave around 6:00 PM”, everyone leaves Acadia between 6:00 PM and 6:30 PM, so Uber is sometimes more expensive than a taxi. For the way back, I recommend you to leave a little later and call Uber around 7:00 pm and go for half price. We wish you a very enjoyable holiday when the pandemic is over…
