If you travel to Atacama Desert in Chile, you will see a huge hand there. This sculpture by Chilean sculptor Mario Irarrázabal in the middle of the Atacama Desert astonishes those who see it. It is quite normal for you to be surprised. The work, which the artist calls ‘Hand of the Desert (Mano del desierto in Spanish language, is 75 km away from the city of Antofagasta. The 11-meter-high hand stands as if asking for help.
The author Mario Irarrázabal, says this imposing monument symbolizes loneliness, injustice and helplessness. Indeed, at the very first moment it arouses these feelings. Unfortunately, some tourists cannot resist the charm of vandalism and pollute the statue with graffiti. Therefore, the hand is periodically cleaned from grafitti.
