We return back from many European travels generally with great admiration. For instance, whilst running from pillar to post between museums in Vienna. we get fascinated by a city so chic. Or else get enchanted by the romanticism in Paris. And London presents the ease of a systematic city that runs like clockwork. In the end, we praise almost all of them. However, when Rome is the case, things are a bit different. Nothing is the same once you visit this eternal city.
To tell you the truth, I was not thinking exactly that, as the plane landed in the Piumicino Airport. However, once I started to pass through thousands of years old history of the arts and being fascinated at every turn of a corner, to me, all roads really started to lead to Rome.
Rome is quite a fascinating city, so rich that you can’t explain it in just one visit. With its impressive architecture, all-pervading pine trees, the crowds in the cafes, delicious meals and amity, it slightly opens the doors to a brand new world. At the end of the day, you may become exhausted after all you see. And we have only three days to allocate to all these enticements.
It, of course, is not possible to explore thousands of years old art history in just three days. We need at least five days just for the museums we really must visit. However, you should also take into account the streets that are inviting at all times. What we are talking about is an atmosphere enshrtned in our hearts with the movies starring Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni, those we watched in admiration…
Acting as the backdrop of Sorrentino’s poetic “The Great Beauty”, the magnificent buuldings or those beautiful tables ingrained in our memories with the movies of Fellini… and energy of the Trastevere streets, the real Italian delicacies of San Lorenzo that can dizzy your head, the flower filled streets of Monti going up to the Colosseum and the unique architecture of Quartiere Coppede.
The Heritage of the Past
Getting to know and understand Rome, that was once a village on the banks of River Tiber that transformed into the powerhouse of Antiquity with its lands stretching as far as the eye can see, the city to which all the roads lead, is in a sense equals coming to grasps with the Mediterranean of our day. The centre of Antiquity that shaped many concepts ranging from law to architecture, citizenship to beauty, is fascinating with its streets and colorful squares that are veritably an open air museum today.
Piazza Navona, Piazza del Popolo and Piazza di Spagna are the most famous, colorful and crowded squares of the city. Watching the statues of the Renaissance era and fountains, you will be accompanied by tourists who sit down to take a breather or try to immortalize the moment by taking photos.
To me, if you are yet to see Rome, than you are in luck, means still have a beatiful dream to be had. But hurry up. Because there are those other “great beauties” such as Florance and Venice waiting in line.
