Flashdance 1983
Leggings that blur the line between street and dance style, oversize silhouettes, permed hair, tank tops, leopard tights, stretch dancer clothes and low-shoulder sweatshirts… Let’s stop here because “dropping shoulders sade is simply and simply Flashdance mahsus. Jennifer Beals portrayed Alex Owens’s lion mane hair and symbolic oversize sweatshirt have not lost anything of popularity even nowadays.
Scarface, 1983
Rihanna said she was impressed by Michele Pfeiffer’s Scarface style when she appeared on stage for the Grammy Award in 2012. Emma Stone again announced the style inspiration Michelle Pfeiffer during the Gangster Squad premiere. As you can see, the ultra-feminine style of Elvira Hancock, the femme fatale character of Scarface, is still on the list of many artists’ style icons. Patricia Norris is Scarface’s costume designer, with narrow collars, shoulder pads and silky silhouettes matching the restrained and cautious sexapel of the 80s.
Blade Runner, 1982
From the transparent raincoats of Chanel’s Spring / Summer 2018 collection, to the chiffon trench coats of Martin Margiela, from the futuristic Balenciaga of Demna Gvasalia to the high waist trousers of the 2018 Spring / Summer men’s collection of Rick Owens; Blade Runner’s influence in today’s fashion world is visible to the naked eye. Raf Simons’ 2018 Spring / Summer men’s collection was under the influence of Blade Runner from head to toe.
Heathers, 1988
Heathers, the dark comedy of the 80s, was a pool of inspiration with numerous fashion references, as well as issues like puberty issues and high school clichés. Plaid patterns, sculpted shoulder blazer jackets, even scrunchie clasps, one of the modern-day flashback trends, are Heathers credit. The fact that each Heather character marks his own region on the vivid color palette of the 80s is an indirect reference to today’s fashion ton-drive-tonal trend. Heather Chandler’s domine red, Heather McNamara’s light yellow, Heather Duke’s imaginary green, and of course Veronica’s intuitive black and blue mix.
Pretty in Pink, 1986
Virginia Woolf’s appointment with Madonna’s teenage age was called Andie in Pretty in Pink. Pretty in Pink’s costume designer Marilyn Vance’s high fashion awareness was scattered across almost every inch of Andie’s polka dot prom dress. Not only that, Andie’s radical retro sunglasses, volcanic explosion-ready style, sculptural blazer jackets and lace collar blouses were the memorable fashion moments of Pretty in Pink.
Desperately Seeking Susan, 1985
From motorcycle gloves to maximalist spirited hair bows, pyramid earrings to reckless necklaces, you can see all the trends that marked the 80s on Susan, the funkie figure of Desperately Seeking Susan. When it comes to the 80s, Susan, the pop and style icon Madonna, still comes to mind.
