The Louvre Museum in Paris, closed its doors on May 27th, turning thousands of visitors away, as security personnel went on strike. The Sud Culture Solidaires union, which is affiliated with the staff, said that the museum reached a record with a total of 10.2 million visitors last year and was “drowned altında under the influx of visitors. “The number of visitors has increased by more than 20% since 2009, but the Museum has not expanded,” the statement said.
Louvre officials made the following statement on twitter: “Due to the recent increase in the number of visitors, members of the Louvre Museum’s reception and security personnel are exercising their right to go on strike. Therefore the museum will be closed all day (May 27)”.
Trade union representatives say that the Louvre administration does not consider the problem of excess visitors and that they are “uncomfortable” with the yüz disgraceful image tı of the institution they work with. In the words of trade unionists, visitors who complain about the conditions at the Museum and staff need to be addressed, and the emergency evacuation procedures of the Museum are not enough.
Representatives of the Sud Culture Solidaires trade union, demanding that Louvre increase the number of staff to the extent that it can provide sufficient service to visitors, agreed to hold a meeting on Wednesday (May 29th) to discuss their next move. At a negotiating meeting today, Museum officials pledged to implement a series of measures, including the recruitment of 30 new staff, to address employee concerns. The museum is still closed to visitors other than prepaid ticket holders.
