'Superman' movie villain unveiled

The Man of Steel will fight an old enemy that has been presented in previous films.

Michael Shannon, who received an Oscar nomination for his supporting role as a mentally disturbed man in “Revolutionary Road” two years ago, was cast as the villain in the next Superman movie.

He will play General Zod face Henry Cavill the Superman in “Superman: Man of Steel” Zod as Superman is from Krypton, where he ordered his armed forces. The character first appeared in 1978 from the two “Superman” and its sequel “Superman II” where he was played by Terence Stamp.

“Zod is not only one of the most formidable enemy of Superman, but one of the most important because he saw Superman that others do not,” said Zach Snyder, director of the new film. “Michael is a powerful actor who can project both intelligence and malice of the character, making him perfect for the role.”

Shannon, seen most recently as an agent of the stern of the federal government in the HBO “Boardwalk Empire” joins a lineup that also includes Amy Adams as Lois Lane, and Diane Lane and Kevin Costner as Martha and Jonathan Kent the adoptive parents of Superman’s alter ego Clark Kent.
